O2 sensor madness

Can anyone explain to me the whole 2 wire vs. 3 wire O2 sensor issue? The old O2 sensor is a 2 wire, the new replacement sensor is a 3 wire...

Good read: Oxygen sensor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:

The probe typically has four wires attached to it: two for the lambda output, and two for the heater power, although some automakers use a common ground for the sensor element and heaters, resulting in three wires. Earlier non-electrically-heated sensors had one or two wires..
Basically 2 wire sensors had 50,000 wear cycle due to not being heated vs heated being double at around 100k.

how would you recommend wiring a 3 wire sensor when its replacing a 2 wire sensor then?

is this for a US or euro 83? euro would be CIS and the 2 wire sensor added in federalizing it might have been jerry rigged. my us 84 uses 3 wire and its the same l-jet system as yours, something seems amiss here.....

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm just going to say that I am apparantly brain-dead because it turns out that I have a 3 wire system all around, and don't know what I was thinking.

Are you going to the car show in Valpo on the 27th?
