1982 928 S 5 speed

I'm trying to join the shark club and going to look at an 82 S 5 speed next week. It's guards red over tan leather and has 70,000 miles. It appears to be in great shape but have yet to see in person or drive it. Any reason to avoid an 82 S, and things to look out for? Owner is asking 12k. Thanks so much for any advice I really appreciate it. Here's the ad:

For $12,500 I would expect it to be:
a:immaculate condition or
b: impeccable service records and run like a top

If it is neither of these I would stay away.

Just IMHO

... or have a gold brick in the trunk.

I too feel it would have to be near showroom for that much

If you're from the US, I don't believe the S was available until 1983. If it's a Euro, it may be a bad ass car if you don't live in an area with emission testing.
It just better be VERY nice for $12K.

Before driving I would start with both a carfax and a autocheck report, but like others have said, no US S in 82, only a competition package with spoilers and the older smaller 4.5L motor.

928 has a very unreliable odometer, almost all have failed at some point in time, and many have been replaced, so all mileage claims need thorough documentation.

not a euro, nor does it have front or rear spoilers which would be indicative of it just being a 82, 928 5 speed. it looks clean, but i've see much better deals

The listing says it sold for $12,500 so maybe there's hope for prices going up someday!

Good luck with it. Hope it turns out to be what it is. Price is not bad if so. You can buy cheaper and wind up putting a lot more time and $$ into it. Always make an offer if so inclined. Maybe have it checked out by someone that knows the 928 before you plop down the $$.

From the pictures, it looks nicer than most 1 year old cars driving around. I hope it's just as nice in person and everything works out for you. You'll have a car you can enjoy from the start and a car that deserves to wear the Porsche emblem.
There are far cheaper 928s out there but you also get what you pay for.

Only thing I think you made a mistake on was using the "buy it now" option. I would have let it ride as the previous bid was only $7,500.00.

I spoke with the owner beforehand and I hit buy it now to end the auction....not obligated at this point

Oh man. A 4.5 for 12K? Although this is hindsight, you should have listened to your audience. This is way too high. You could gotten an S4 for that, and a very nice one too. At the very minimum, you should have gotten an 86.5 or a 84-85 Euro with a 310HP Engine. Or a Euro S 80-83 with a 30HP Engine.

If it were me, I would risk the negative feedback and renig on this deal. Walk away.

^^^ still kinda pricey, but interior looks real sexy, and that color is top notch . I would rather spend my cash on anything but guards red! no offense to 928ers with guards red, but just not a red kinda guy

might not be the greatest authority on the 928's but if you are just getting into the market for them, you will be surprised on how many of them turn up. Many can be bought way cheaper than twelve grand. I have seen some pretty slick looking sharks come and go in the last year, and most much cheaper than that. I have an 80 4.5, and I will be honest it handles like a boss, but it is not going that fast. More speed would be the only thing i would ask for with my car, not that i race it, but just a little power enhancement.

It is all in your preference. A 4.7L euro 300 hp would be awesome. Leo has one I believe.

For me a lower hp non S is fine for starters. Please read up on S vs. non-S models so you know what they are.

OB - original body or old bugger. then there are S then S2 then S3 then S4. I think that is how the S's go.

My opinion = get a 85 5L or newer. I have driven one. I liked it at 288hp, stock. That is where I am headed or skip all of this and go to GT or GTS.
