Servo diaphrams

I have a bad vacuum leak in my A/C system. I have noticed that badders in two of the servos have a hole. Can you buy only the bladders for the air cond. vacuum servos?

Also, Do you have to take out the entire interior unit to replace some of them.

Thanks Mike

Mike, I believe Roger at 928sRus has them...not sure how to access them on such a new, fancy model as yours is...

Everything doesn't have to come out when servicing the actuators, but it sure makes it easier for a couple of them. Roger does have just the diaphragms for some of them, but the others are easier to buy the whole unit and just swap the diaphragm from the new one to the old unit without disassembling ALL of it. The hardest ones to get to are behind the dash and to the right of the center vent. You just almost have to remove the dash to get to that one. But remember: there are only 7 bolts/screws that hold the dash in after you remove the pod and the center console. Not that hard if you are to that point.

Like all projects with this car, it starts off being a curiosity on why something does not work. Then the next thing you know you have the console out and all the tools you own inside the car. It seems like anything you do with this car you have to remove everything with everyone of your tools.

Stepson,

Thanks for the information. I have the console out. All the servos are leaking. I want to do it right. Since you say it is easier to replace the servos with the dash out, thats what I am going to do. Is there anything else I should do since it is all torn out?

Thanks. Mike P

Clean the grounds under the steering column.

Replace the foam that joins the center vent to the dash as it is certainly FUBAR by now from the heat and humidity. I replaced mine with caulk-saver (rope type foam from Home Depot) and it worked great.

When I worked on the passenger footwell fresh air vent on my '84 Euro (Stepson), I decided that since it will never be a concours car, I would not replace the actuator, but revise the spring to hold the flap shut versus default to open. I did this because I could not see the sense in combining the blast furnace heated summer air here in Texas with cold air to try to cool the cabin.(I also blocked off the vacuum line but did not remove it.) This can be reversed at any time, but has worked well for me so far in this car. The down side to doing this I have been told is the possibility of lingering smells and moisture retention from not having fresh air. My thought is if I want fresh air, I'll open a frigging window or the sunroof!

If you plan to have LED illumination for your instrument pod, this would be a good time to send a note to Nicole on RL at www.hookedoncars.com who sells the Jager LED illumination kit. It is nice upgrade for the illumination of your instruments and really makes the dash look modern. I have tried other vendors, but this is the only one that works as advertised for the pre-digital dash cars.

Mike...I also found the actuator above the CE panel broken on mine, but the diaphragm was good, although a piece of the spring rusted off. I re stretched the spring, treated the diaphragm with some Armour All, reassembled the actuator and epoxied back together and clamped for about a week. rock solid now and worked great with a vacuum test. I got to it after I removed the blower assembly.

I also found one for a Benz on eBay, and got it for $6. I was prepared to make a bracket for it if the epoxied one failed....I have now added those to my usual eBay searches.

Good luck with it....I am envious that you actually get to work on yours...all i get to do is read forums and look at parts..

I did not take any pictures of the repair, since I was working with epoxy, I had gooey fingers, and no one to play photographer.

You can see it in it's broken state, at the bottom of this picture. It is now repaired, awaiting re-assembly. I think I am going to rebuild the blower with a GM one, per a RL thread.

****Well, since I am lame, and my pictures are always sideways, for some reason, until someone fixes it, it is on the right of the pic*****

OK, picture fixed. Thanks to who dunnit... Broken actuator now on bottom.

I like the idea of the LED instrument panel. The odometer and tripometer are broken. It's probably the broken gear that I have read about in other threads. When I take the POD out I am going to fix both items. The list is growing.

Ron, thanks for the picture. I say your video. Sounds like it wants to start.

Thanks everyone. Mike P

Not easy but replaced all the diaphragms, but very doable. Now working on the POD. Replacing the lamps and also working on the Odometer. Found out its not a gear problem. No idea what yet. Posted the question.
