Good to hear...well good to see! It's only 30 years old, so it has more life...the important part is what will it take to revive her?

The cracked oil fill hose is no longer available, but you can splice in a fitting piece. Check all the vacuum hoses for integrity. Check all the fuel lines as well. Also, inspect your wire harness that goes from the 14 pin connector front pas side of eng compartment next to jump post; sometimes degraded insulation is in there and can cause some stuff you do not want to happen.

Have you done a compression and fuel pressure check?? You may want to check all the inline filters (small mesh ones) that are in the various deliver componenets of the CIS.

You can replace the tank or take it to a radiator shop and they can clean, weld and seal it.

Jon

Is it just me, or is your right front turn signal a bit off?

What are you going to do with it? Our answer as to whether or not you should do it depends on this.

1. Daily driver: I would say maybe, but make sure you have a backup in the form of a person with a car who can pick you up if you wind up on the side of the road. This car is 31 years old; there are lots of little hidden gremlins that can crop up with a car that age. 928's are WELL BUILT cars, but that means little when the car was old enough to drink beer 10 years ago.

2. Race car: GO for it! That lightweight car would make a great autocross car. Reliability doesn't matter, and the interior [which you would remove] is kind of beat up anyway. Toss it and throw in a roll cage, a set of racing seats, remove the A/C, the sunroof guts, and the bumper beams. You now have a 3000 pound rear-drive car with perfect dynamics. Add a good suspension kit and voila: You're the king of the autocross circuit. Or what ever level of royalty your driving skills can achieve-

3. Concours restoration: If your first name is "William" and your family name is "Gates" and you own a large amount of stock in a company named "Microsoft", then I suggest you attempt to restore that car. Otherwise, I suggest finding a good bankruptcy attorney first, because THAT thing, while really cool...is going to need $20,000 of work to bring it back to the point where it can go to shows and win trophies.

Really, when I encounter people who are interested in my car, if I determine that they might actually be potential 928 enthusiasts versus people just interested in an exotic performance car, I give them the sage advice:

"Buy the most expensive example you can afford"

Why? Because restoring one of these cars is EXTREMELY expensive! At least if you want to do it right. Most of these cars have suffered indifferent maintenance over the decades at best. Many have been downright abused. These cars are built like the proverbial brick scheize-haus, but if you don't fix problems when they occur, then they eventually build up and then they start causing other problems. Example: You find a great 928 for $5000. The PO left the timing belt alone for 80,000 miles, and then cheerfully sells you the car. On the way home, the belt skips a tooth or two, and now YOU need to rebuild two heads and maybe even replace a few pistons. Now you need to spend another $5000 just to get back to where you were....

Dude- let me give you some advice: Look at your bank account. How much do you have to spend on a 928? If it is less than about $10,000 then I would leave that car alone and find a good 928 on eBay. Really, these days I think that truly decent 928's cost about $15k.

Good luck!

N!

No radio, no passenger door handle, makes me think this got towed in some time in the past for some issue and hasn't run since. Everyplace the leather has shrunk, will get worse fast with use, seats tearing at the seams etc.

It would have to have some serious plus points that I can't see from pictures to make it other than a parts car.

I think it has possibilities due to completeness. But there are a number of caveats.

I would take Normy's advise!!!! It all depends on your situation and how much you are willing to spend to get the car in good operating condition, let alone a show car. Do a lot of reading on the 928. Nothing is cheap on these cars. If you are having the work done, it will cost you plenty. Doing it yourself, you will still need a lot of money and time. If your uncle is Jay Leno, no problem.

i picked up the car from a freind of mine that had purchase a piece of land and the property had ten cars on it. i helped him get the titles for the cars so he can sell them. all the cars were in good shape. it just looks like they were sitting there for a while. i got the car for almost nothing. there were 3 porsches 2 928 and a 911. i took the black one because im a sucker for black. the 911 needed body work. i think with a little tlc i can have a car that i can drive and enjoy.i need to replace the tank and replace the lines. i think the fuel lines are clogged but not sure how to check for that.im not looking for a show car but i think i can get this one running. capt lunas seafood bar is in queens ny and i own the place.

How much is he selling it for? Like Fred says "pick it up cheap and fix it."

Sounds like a deal. However, before you start throwing money at it, have the major items checked out so you can get an idea of it's condition. It may be worth fixing and then maybe not. Once you start pouring money into it, it can add up real fast before you know it.

Hey John, welcome to the club.

so that we can get you started, excuse the pun, you need to put your car details in your sig. This way when someone answers you they can see the correct year of car.

Ok so has this 28 ran anytime recently to your knowledge.
the next thing you WILL need is a manual. there are some free PDF I'm sure

There is a lot of experience in these forums

its 1979 928 with the cis system.i can get the car to run if i feed it fuel from the throttle camber but wont stay running. the car runs on all 8 cylinders and sounds like theres no problem with the motor.it has 90k on the clock and before i start replacing timebelt and all the other maintance items that i know i have to replace i want to get it running then go from there. i dont have a lot of history on the car but its acar that i can probably get to be a good driver. i know its not gone to be a show car without a lot money thown at it.

i got the car for almost nothing but i want to get it running and take it from there. i did some homework and the cis system if you dont drive the car the lines get clogged and the car doesnt run i think thats the problem. i checked the fuel pump under the tank and i can feel it turning on and trying to pump. so im leaning on the fact that the lines are clogged.im trying to find out if theres anything silly to check that might stop it from running if the lines are not clogged.

John,
In addition to earlier post...
The plenum looks correct, however, I do not see a fuel line that goes into the fitting/plug(? should be a banjo fitting?) in the plenum's front above the cold start valve pas side; it is appears like a cap or plug is there.

I do not know the impact of this in the CIS, maybe someone can add...??

check your primary filter?? as well
Jon

Here's one place for 79 info. Might not cover everything, but be sure to read Rnd.34 fuel lines.

SharkSkin's 928 Home Page

Go to rennlist . com to search CIS stuff

Plugged is correct for manual trans car, cars with auto trans have a vacuum line running to the modulator from there.
