Design dogs of the 928-what would you change? Superficially?
Hello.
The 928 is very easy on the eyes. Isn't it ? If you could change the car from the outside and inside, what would you change on it? NOT MECHANICAL !! Interior.. Exterior.. I , myself would have on the body anyways; would have eventually rounded off the rear fender tops.. Perhaps widened, the rear. A little coke bottle longitude view. Maybe, evolve the rear wing after 88. Interior is quite right..to me. I cannot stand the STAR WARS auto shifter rubber accordian boot! Sad that it was never changed! UGLY! So is the auto shifter console. ok for the 70's but after that what the heck ?? That's about it. Quite good for a design to be sold in 77.

I would get rid of the rear wing and go back to the OB style black 'spoiler'.

I wish they would have offered a stripped out version with no stereo or A/C, smooth one piece door panels, light manual seats, no back seats, and a built in roll bar. It would naturally have to have 8 inch rear wheels. I realize they had a Club Sport edition, but let me know when you find one. Also the CS edition wasn't really that light.
What I would change about the stock 928: I wish they would have made the dash out of something besides cracked plastic. lol The headlights should have had some type of fold up aerodynamic cover that fit flush to the body when the lights were off. Maybe even a transparent cover. The front springs should have been more stiff to handle the weight. The rear hatch latch should have been designed more like the 944. The A/C and heater blower should have been tossed out of the parts bin and stomped on. Other than that I would change almost nothing. Maybe a tall downforce wing simular to the original three piece unit on the S, but in one piece and hiked up off of the body about a foot or more.

Headlights, something flush, something modern, but suiting the style and lines of the 928.
Front license plate mount that looks nice and doesn't have a lot of drag. Pod and console I would like to start over completely, mostly for function, drives me nuts the pod gauges are all so flaky. |

could have had 911 style front headlights, and wide body flares to fit 11 or 12 inch wheels...
i like the no rear spoiler early look.. but like the front chin spoiler pasha seats throughout the whole evolution...

wheels and steering wheels.. are totally goofy on all the cars except for the early cars with phone dials and the 3-spoke steering wheels. That steering wheel (mid 80's) is horrific.

![]() I've thought about fitting 993 headlights in the pods, and having them raise up only at a slight angle (Think 968). Makes it more aerodynamic when driving at night, and gives a better pattern with the DE lenses, without looking wierd like the shark eyes built in by Strosek.

No, don't change the head lights!! That is what makes it a Shark along with the grill. Those big round lights looking up catch a lot of attention.

They would still be big, round and looking up. . .
Just with a more modern binnacle. Like Singer does it with the old 911's: ![]()

I would alter the rear greenhouse. Looks like the Pacer that inspired it.
I don't like the wraparound spoiler, either. Bare looks better. |

Tastes change over the years but i would have incorporated a cam style tail into the sheet metal from the start, like a 60's Ferrai GTO rather than tack on wings later on. That would necessitate a slight change to the rear quarter tops also. The tail lights would of been different too.
There would be no German Pacer jokes right now. Would never change the headlights or front end at all, just the rear. It was the 70s maannn.. But the design was mind boggling back then, i remember thinking it was so futuristic. It still looks good to me. Great thread.

This might sound a bit low brow, but I think a factory style "935" treatment on the F & R fenders would be kinda cool

From the rear of the side doors to the tip of the front bumper on OB blows me away. Sometimes I can't stop staring at the lines and curves. So beautiful.

The 928 is recognized chiefly by the headlights. Best attribute in my opinion. Still cool and Miura like. Reminds me when I stopped to pump gas and an elderly Lady comes up to me and says: "It must be difficult driving at night with the lights pointed up at the sky!" I laughed so hard that I washed the side of the vehicle with gas. ![]()

I sit..that is sat in the garage looking at the car.
I am positioned 4 feet away and just forward of the front door. I have spent many hours looking at that view especially rearward. On the other hand. The look of the car while sitting slightly rear of the car and 3 feet to the side with a 3/4 view bothers me. Everything seems elongated. The rear quarter glass seems to long and the rear bumper looks like it juts out a little too much. I would have decreased the rear bumper length 2 inches.

Headlight Assembly -
Speaking of a possible headlight alternative - a number of years ago there was a factory modified 928 with a squared off backend that made it look like a small station wagon. I believe this “ one off ” model was built as a birthday gift for Ferry Porsche in 1984. It had a pair of permanently laid back headlight assemblies with a slightly bubbled lens that poked up just above the surface of the fenders. The lens must have been a reflective focusing element that straightened the headlights into a beam of concentrated light out in front of the car. Since the safety spec’s in Germany are so strict - these assemblies must have had a real part number (from somewhere) and be road worthy. Especially since Ferry Porsche reportedly drove this car for a couple of years before it was put into their factory museum.
Anyway, I had tried to chase down some additional information on these headlights way back when - without any luck. Even a buddy of mine who worked in the parts department of a Porsche dealership at the time was unable to find out anything. Has anyone ever seen any unusual headlight alternatives. My wife had suggested a railroad lantern on a stick - but I told her that option was out. Michael ![]()
