Replacement Battery and electrical requirements

I plan to install the lightest battery I can find that will meet the requirements of the car and still fit. What are the basic requirements that I need to replicate...CCA and whatever else? Has any of you fitted a battery that is not a group 48 or 49? Looks to me like a group 91 will work nicely as well. Let me know if you have fitted another group and what that is. Also, what performance does my 1982 require from a battery?

I would suggest to use the correct sized battery.
the big issue you will have is the battery sliding in the tray,
since it will not be able to be securely fastened,
This can damage the ground wire and the positive cable.
and possibly lead to shorting of the terminals against the battery lid.
In this case more is better

For racing many use a Odyssey battery, they are the same type used in a lot of the jumper boxes, AGM, I think. High current, low capacity, small size and wt.

Just find the specs on a standard 928 with A/C Battery. Find a smaller one with same CCA Specs and modify the brackets. In my opinion, stick with stock.

I am missing the hold-downs for the battery compartment anyway, so I am on my own to figure that out. I found that a 40R or 41 will fit great and just be not as wide as stock. The height and depth are the same. CCA was about 700 on the one I saw at my local auto parts place. I live in FL and it's not ever cold much so I don't have to deal with CCA really. I plan to put a disconnect switch on the ground cable, since the battery is buried in the back. I figure it'll be easier to DC whenever I need to do that. The ground cable seems to be the right length still so it should all work. I will buy some generic hold-downs and make it stay. Thanks guys.

928 INTL has the right hold down if you use the right battery.

If you get a smaller sized unit that is not well secured you could be asking for trouble. From moving around in the 'box', if you lose a connection whilst the car is running you will be looking at problems.

Here we go again with all of the recommendations to stay original. Come on guys. I like to modify. Every project car I have ever had ran and performed better than when I got it. My car was dirt cheap and I am going to make it better and keep it on the road. But it won't be original and I am not going to apologize.

it is illegal to modify the battery box or hold down or use a smaller battery,
there will be fines to pay and possibly a short circuit of the electrical system ,
and then you will let the smoke out of the wires.
This isnt the place for the butcher to show up.

Modify sure, but modify 'modifiable' things - gauges, sound, illumination...
One of the foundations of the 928 electrical system can not be 'tricked out', and certainly not by an amateur. You were advised on RL as well by about 15 of us. Listen to what we said about the battery selection and 'modify' something else.

Yeah, the factory battery spec works perfectly. Focus your energy on something else, like a killer stereo. The 928 soundstage is the BEST I've experienced.

I bought a direct replacement battery at Walmart. Think it was under $100, works great, fits perfectly.
