What is it with mirrors falling off?
My black 85 Euro has had its share of time in the sun, but all three freaking mirrors have fallen off. I think I bumped the inside rear view mirror, but one day I closed the driver door and the glass fell out and broke on the ground, same thing a couple weeks ago on the passenger side. Its still got a list of "other stuff"so I haven't been worrying about the mirrors, but had to move it a few miles the other day and a car with ZERO mirrors can make you paranoid fast. Especially the side mirrors as the grey back plate is still there, so I look at it to see whats behind me and see nothing.
I think I have a few spare mirrors, but I don't want to toss a good heated back plate, so I want to also replace the glass. Anybody know of any especially good sources for just the glass? Whats the best way to stick it down? *** Note to Porsche is always so expensive types, wife's Lincoln replacement glass is $420 (heated with auto dim, and only one model used that size and shape). |

I just glued those aluminum tabs down to the glass with a crap load of super glue and it seems to hold okay.

Super glue, cynoacrylic doesn't like heat and moisture, so not a good long term, but I will check on the pink windshield epoxy.

BTW this is to hold the glass to the plate, the prongs on the back of the plate make electrical contact to heat the mirror don't they, so would need something special to put them back on.

My driver side mirror almost fell off, too. I caught it before it hit the ground. Glued back on with Gorilla Glue.

my mirrors on one car behind me = a small fleet. giggly, sha sha sha shake shake your shakey!
i have couple mirror fixtures w glass setting on, waiting, wanting to replace my shakey with fine fine scratches in it from garage full of sandblast dust pcar not covered and quick wipedown scratched it. wouldnt you know if you didnt want it to come off, unless it pops off totally the tiny bit of glue holds for dear life. pull and twisted it a bit but thinnish glass free floating , something semi flexible its tacked to and a big lip on housing recessing the glass cant get a scrape/putty knife in there. can chip the glass with the no space between housing/glass. i given it the screw it approach,dont want to damage/stem ability for it to electrically move. i just keep checking hoping i win and comes off in hand and gorilla/thanks it. win win cause i got a piece waiting(yrs/yrs..), as i chant fall off fall off. haha win against the pcars will , you never stand a chance.

Two things irk me about the glass;
Replacement glass looks like it costs around $18 to $20 shipped, and I can buy a set of complete mirrors on ebay for $38 a pair shipped, or wait for 928Intl 1/2 price sale and get genuine used Porsche mirror and back plate for $22.50. Quality of replacement glass is unknown, and therefor always suspect, especially with a cheap replacement brand like Dormans. |

Hi.
Does the glue dry solid or a bit flexible ? Drying times ? Thanks.

Going to read the bottle now.
Clean surfaces, damp it, clamp it, and I forget the next thing. Glue expands 3x to 4x, don't use on polyethylene or polypropylene, and cured glue can be removed with a chisel or sandpaper, so guessing hard. Work it for up to 10 min, cures 1 to 2 hours. |

wouldn't clear silicone work? a thin layer is quite strong, and stays flexible....

Silicone doesn't have a LOT of stick to it, more a filler and hope.
I figure Porsche used something they thought would work pretty well when the mirrors were made, but 30 years later it seems to dry up and fail. I poked around in my boxes of junk and found a pair of old mirrors, one ok, and one has a huge broken area covered by a cheap dome, but now I can see behind me. |
