Wheel aerodynamics

I think my 928 wheels are classy but a little boring.

I always liked the deep dish look on a wheel.

It was looking at photos of high speed vehicles running the salt flats

they don't want vent holes to be streamlined, but are pretty much flat as these 928 wheels are.

I guess they were designed for high speed aerodynamic efficiency.

It's made me kind of like them.

Running one wiper arm, serious about weight savings, probably will feel like i am in a 917 running in the wet at LeMans.

I have an '80 us with disc wheels as well. My car has '87 S4 rear wheels which do have some dish, and allow for wider tires. See if you can score some 8" wheels for the back.

The 80's corvettes had the dish wheels also. They are the 1 thing that dates our cars. A spoked wheel would allow for better brake cooling which is what I will eventually be doing since tires for the 16" dishes are almost non-existant anymore.

Once again i agree (feel like Mitt debating foreign affairs)

I'd like a basket weave BBS, or 5 spoke Kinesis or similar polished deep dish and darker spokes.

I like the 5 spoke Porsche Cup wheels on the GT and GTSs also.

The disc wheels are very light though, they are lighter than the Fuchs on my 911.

Stock brakes and flats do just fine way past the limits of most drivers even on most race courses.

I like the 928 dish wheels, but, if I ever hit the mega-millions Lottery I'd buy myself a set of these beauties in a heartbeat!

Danglerb, don't get me wrong. I love the dish wheels, especially on my white car because they don't detract from the lines of the car. The problem is tires are no longer available in the sizes I need so I will have to go up to 17" or maybe 18" wheels. I have 1 new set of tires left which will probably go on the 911 with Fuchs so the 928 will probably get cup or twist wheels.

I would love a set of BBS basket weave wheels, or some other wheel in 17, 18" , however finances dictate otherwise. In the 16" size, 225-50-16 tires are still plentiful, and relitively inexpensive. (possessors of 7" wheels rejoice) Unfortunately, 245-45-16 tires are almost extinct (except in race spec form) So I may have to start running 245-50-16's. I guess if a set of nice looking 17's were to fall in my lap......

Yeah, the 245's are my problem. When I bought tires for my 911 a couple years ago, I doubled up because they told me my sizes were being discontinued, it runs 225 & 245. I guess I could find a couple of 6"x16" Fuchs and run 6" & 7" (factory original combination) when my tires run out. Handling will change as a down side. When the 928 needs new shoes it will get new feet also. LOL

Nothing cheap, but around $200 a tire here are a dozen nice ones;

The 'Manhole' , 7 slot or Flats are forged wheels that are typically stronger and lighter than reproduction wheels (which are generally cast).

Not a great idea, tyres age (quite quickly) after a couple of years (on or off a car)they lose the flex.
Tyres are date coded, anything older than 2 years, not a good buy.

That is true, i bought tires for my BMW R65 and with in a few months they were all cracked along the side wall, I was sold old German motorcycle tires.
Guess the brand?
Keep your extra tires indoors somewhere and they will be fine.

Yeah, the tires are stored in the basement, out of direct sunlight. As for 2 year old never mounted tires, the only person that would say they are not good is a tire salesman working on straight commission.
