Trans-axle Cold

I noticed with my hand held laser temp sensor that it takes a long time for the 928 trans axle to warm up. Seems like by the time it warms up, the trip is over.

It is starting to get cold here in the Philly area, i was thinking about warming the tranny for a half hour some way (electrical device) in the garage before use.
Anybody try this before?

No, but I think its a great idea!
My early boxes always shift better in heat of summer.

I think the case temp may lag the fluid temp by a LOT. The colder it is, the higher the viscosity, the higher the friction, the faster it heats up.

With the aluminum and fins etc I'm not sure how long you could keep the tranny temp above outside air temp either.

To help your syncros just do a 1-3 shift until warm. Did it in all my past 928s and Ferrari's with the dogleg trans. No problems.

Synthetic fluid will pretty much cure cold shifting problems. It doesnt get at thick and allows the syncros to grab and work

The cure for you is synthetic gearoil .

And gentle (Short) shifting for the first 5 miles or so, after that beat on it like it was summer... (keeping in mind cold asphalt = less traction..)

I have Slick 50 gear oil in it not by choice, the P.O. just had it done a few months before i picked up the car. to be honest I don't even know what that stuff is. Sounded good and i figured it was synthetic, but don't exactly know, i always thought slick 50 was an additive.. It was expensive like 69 bucks for the oil.
I better change it out for synthetic Valvolene which i like.
I was thinking it would be great to have a small heat element that screwed into the trans drain plug just like a block heater.

I figure the tranny goes 50k miles so buy the absolute best you can, some say Mobil One, some like Purple, or Redline. What works best varies depending on whats good/bad about your transmission.

2nd and 3rd a little slow, probably slick 50 gear oil is wrong stuff, I should have known the P.O. got it wrong.
I used Valvolene synthetic 75/90 in my Carrera and immediately felt the difference.
If you guys have experience with different brands please advise.
Like to try Red Line.

Drained gear oil, i don't think he had it changed, no surprise. Anyway, the gear oil looked a decage old and was as thick as it comes.
I put in Walmart Tech something or other brand (it's Valvolene i was told) synthetic gear oil and what a difference.
Shifts great.
It was only $11 a liter too.
