CD player Vs Radio

I have seen a few posts where people swapped the stock radio for a more modern CD.... I prefer to have the stock radio, but I am at the point where I want to sacrifice stock look, for having my choice of music. I run an I pod with FM transmitter, but the wire looks stupid, and I would prefer to have a CD player with usb.

are there kits to receive an aftermarket player, and which do you recommend

If you have a stock radio and want to keep the wiring original you "may" be able to get a pair of wiring harness adapters. They are short harnesses one to match the cars factory plugs in the opposite sex and a standard for the adapter brand plug on the other end, and a second harness again standard to match other harness connector and the other end opposite sex plugs to match the radio you want to use.

Mounting stuff might still exist but is less likely as it would be to fit the 928, where the radio harness stuff would be some kind of early Blaupunkt as used in many Porsches.

Crutchfield might be a good start, Schoshe is a common brand or close to how its spelled.

Main catch is that the way the amp is done factory stinks. Its speaker level to a front back fader then the amp, and all modern sets will have two front and two rear outputs.

I used JVC head units on two of mine, but rather than screw with integrated radio in my wife's Lincoln she uses a cassette adapter that plugs into her phone and MP3 etc in the headphone output.

There are devices that USED to be made such as the cassette adaptor that was mentioned. The fact is the radio/cassette deck in a car has been dead for well over a decade and it may be hard to find a company making anything anymore. You may want to look on ebay. In fact CD's are on there way out in favor of mp3 formats. There are companies that make very modern radios masked with vintage faceplates. It's mostly for american muscle cars but they may have something with the look you want.

I like my JVC : JVC DVD/CD Radio

ok, so obviously i was aware Cds are dead, so I was actually looking for a good MP3 deck. I will play on crutchfield.. and report back

It's almost impossible to keep up with electronic technology. The item you buy is already being replaced with a newer model the minute you buy it. Look at Iphone's G, 3G, 3GS, 4G......55GS soon....MP3, MP4......MP95....Windows, 3.1, XP, 95, Vista, Windows 7,....Windows 8..... Get what makes you happy now and don't try to keep up with all this.

I put a new Sony CD / tuner in an 85.
Am driving the various speakers directly with it.
It has inputs on face for Ipod or a flash drive.
Works great and has been for 2 years.
Some of the buttons / dials are chrome colored.
I'd paint them black if stock look mattered to me.
It doesn't.

My friend just bought for around $200 an Alpine deck with a CD. It has an mp3 input as well as pandora, and a bunch of other stuff I haven't even heard of. Hard to go wrong with that. Unless you are running a serious system with amps ect, you should do real well in the $200 range

FWIW ...

1/2 price sale at 928intl includes used radios. They have a stack of both factory and aftermarket along with various dodads related to them, maybe even some of the adapter kits for install.

We are at something of a crossroads in car entertainment. Technology is VERY slow to die in factory sound systems, I would not speak with any confidence that cassette players are not still sold as factory options, but adapters to play through the cassette in a car are still common. Three technologies are "waiting" to converge, car PC, cell phone, GPS and car specific applications like exist on some smart phones. As the three converge anything prior will be kind of "old", but at the same time radio both AM and FM will continue to try and hold market share as will satellite stuff.

My own choice, tuned exhaust with a 14" magnaflow, and listen to the Porsche V8 channel.

Yep, thats what I listen too.

I was a musican for years and have taught piano almost my whole life. I prefer the sound of my 928.

Someday I may look into installing a music listening device.

One other thing, if you do install a newer radio, just keep the original one in case you sell the car and the new owner wants it "stock".

Yah, i would keep it. I really don't think my stock speakers even sound THAT bad, however I need music, and The radio is awful in regards to the music they play. I use an I pod with FM transmitter, but it looks to stupid having a cord coming out of my cig lighter. I want a Deck, MP3 ready, so i can wirelessly send from i pod, or use micro SD, or a flash drive.

I did not really elaborate on the initial post. One thing I do not like it a classic car with tacky cheap radio, with chrome, and silver knobs. Nothing in the 928 interior is silver, so some radio look stupid

Harborman- what model is yours? I like it, does it have usb import for music on a flashdrive?

Hi, I really like my JVC . It is a KDX77 or something like that. When off it's all black, no chrome, no silver knobs, no knobs at all. It's touch screen. It has a USB port on a cable I leave in the under dash storage area. It has Bluetooth and it does connect to my Iphone either that way or via USB. It plays CD's and DVD! It has input for a video cam. You can also get the Digital radio attachment. It comes with a microphone for the phone option. You can customize the look on the screen and even put pictures in it. It also has a remote control.

Stock speakers had foam surrounds, the wiggly edge between the outside of the cone and frame, and for most its had, the foam is just gone. Shop around kits to replace the surround are cheap and its not a difficult job.

Sign of bad surround, high freq ok, no bass.

I have been VERY happy on several cars adding a subwoofer and high passing the mains, all the bass goes to the sub, and none go to the mains so they sound better and play louder.

Yes, that foam does deteriorate with age. Better to replace the speakers then have the old ones redone, as speakers are small. I put in the spare tire sub used in a Toyota and added a sub amp, what a difference! Total cost sub was $ 50 used, amp, new Boss amp $47.

Personal preference, but the original Blaupunkt's fit and are of good quality, above a current modestly priced speaker, so I intend to fix a few and at least compare the sound to some Alpine replacements.

OTOH the speakers that Hans had made apparently are very good, but I don't know if they fit early cars without external grills on the door panels.

I did replace all of my speakers in the doors and rear sides. I went with some of the newer top quality ones out there. The Blau is good stuff but others are in there with them. The only speakers I had reconed were from my in home McIntosh ones.

I didn't catch any details, but I've seen a USB plug in the front plus radio only for like $20 new, which seemed crazy cheap, but who knows. Looked sort of like a typical cheap car stereo.

Sounds too good to be true. I paid about $469 for my radio, plus the speakers, sub woofer and amp, another $300 or so.
