I agree, except for a timing belt type of purchase. Who knows how long those timing belts have been sitting around the warehouse? If you're gonna use 6 years as a replacement life and they've had your timing belt for a couple of years before they ship it to you, are you effectively only getting 4 years life out of that timing belt?

Try here.
Dwayne is working on an 87. Dwayne's Garage Your 85 isn't much different. Slight difference in tensioner; different pivot bolt arrangement for tensioner/waterpump, difference in the covers, the fan and the routing of the wire harness. Note that Dwayne's writeup doesn't do a great job showing the parts for the tension warning circuit, IIRC, he omits showing a washer that is crucial to preventing early warning light. Read closely the following. One key at this point is to refrain from planning your finish-date. That way, when you realize you didn't buy enough of the parts you really need to replace, you won't feel bad delaying the project completion. Another is to post great closeup pictures and ask questions. Be anal and bring the board along with you. That way you get the advantage of the best advice from guys that have done this before you. (I bet none of us got it all right the first time). Last edited by Landseer; 02-18-2013 at 05:32 PM.. |

Go Porktensioner - it replaces the stock unit with one they would have used if they designed the motor today. Bottom shot, of course.
