4.7L 16v interference or non?

Good morning guys!

I've got a quick question for you. Is the U.S. 4.7 liter engine out of a 1984 S an interference engine or non?

Thanks

I might have found me another 928 ;) I've always wanted one...now I might have two...lol

US version, no worries. If Euro, it depends on if it is an early or late '84.

BoiseShark 03-23-2013 06:41 AM

This little jewel right here. I'm leaving tomorrow to go pick it up. U.S. version with Euro headlights...don't know why I'm so excited for those.

It's black on black with some body damage..passenger door...driver front fender.
Needs a new clutch slave cylinder
Under 130K miles and engine supposedly runs great

I don't think this will be as big a project as my non-running, bare metal interior 79 was.

WHAT AM I DOING?

riber.bentsen 03-23-2013 06:52 AM

That should clean up nicely! :) You'll have lots of fun in a 5-speed S.

BoiseShark 03-23-2013 07:04 AM

I'm planning on it. ;)

The PO is selling it for parts because it has no title and was about to part it out himself. I'm going to try and change that.

a little red tape is worth it to me to see this thing back on the road.

I've had the local PD run the vin and at least it's not stolen and I guess if for some reason I cannot re-title it, I'll let you guys scavenge.

Niiiiiice...I like it!

Assume that it's interference and maintain accordingly. No one can tell you for sure with out touching the motor....according to the data it's not supposed to be, but that doesn't mean squat.

BoiseShark 03-23-2013 01:55 PM

Good advice Pete.. I can't wait to get this thing home.

stepson 03-23-2013 02:06 PM

And a 5 speed, too!! Good Save!!!

DougM 03-23-2013 02:09 PM

It is not a Euro so it is definitely not interference.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to Portland for the week and I will be picking it up on my back. I'll fill you guys in when I get home. Wish me luck! The reason I asked about interference is that the op told me it's a driver except for the slave cylinder so I'm going to be driving it back to Boise. Going to fix the slave and head out...So again, Wish me luck!

My read of "except for the slave cylinder" is that they can't get the dual clutch sorted out, which is tricky and expensive. I would run an autocheck or carfax and see what the title history looks like, no reason why most title issues can be resolved one way or another. Make sure you get all the info solid on a bill of sale at least.

130k on an early car and the transmission and clutch will be ready for rebuilding.

I hope your not paying more than $700.

I'm so excited! I stopped to see it on my way to Portland. I'm driving my '79 by the way...450 miles and it drove like a champ. Makes me proud and I know I took a leap of faith...the first time it's been out of Boise since finding it in a farmers field and after eight months of wrench turning.

Anyway, the '84 in question fired up and runs beautifully and idles at 800 rpm...no knocks or misses...not even a leak of oil. It has 126k original miles and even has the owners manual. I've got a new slave on order and will be here by Thursday. I'm going to stop back by and install it on Saturday and drive it back to Boise.

I really hope the PO knows what he's talking about and the slave is all it needs. I quess we'll see. He said he rebuilt it last summer and drove it around but it went bad again over the winter of sitting. He showed me his Pontiac GTO sitting in his shed...I'll snap pictures of it before I leave...fast straight liner!

I'm getting it for $900 Fixer...so I'm close to your advised price. I'll keep you guys updated. Everyone please keep your fingers crossed.

Excellent!

the problem could be if he replaced the slave with a new one and the pushrod is too long. Common with slave replacements on earlier cars. It can cause problems and there is no way to adjust or bleed the clutch to correct the problem. You need to shorten the pushrod and spring. That assumes that he replaced it with a new one.

Great thought Doug.
