1979 Porsche 928 Intake Project
Hello Guys So I just bought a Beautiful Porsche 928, 1979. The intake needs going through I got it for metal Value and everything is there. I So far took off all the injectors and casings and was left with Vacuum, I started removing and and will update with pictures later. So far A little 5 point vacuum connector was broken and I don't know anything about finding it. I am also replacing the old hose that broke from touching it. The car ran terribly a year ago for about 10 minutes and I finally buy it an it no longer runs. Nothing was done and before then the car sat for 3 years untouched. Literally the guy owned the car just to attract customers and finally sold it to me.

So far I figure I need:
Spark Plugs (Iridium) Oil Change (Synthetic) New Hoses around. and the connectors that broke. Intake Gaskets. and to empty the little bit off gas left in the system. |

I recommend the standard spark plugs, they seem to like those better...our host here on pelican has most parts, the rest from perhaps 928intl. Make sure you replace ALL rubber fuel lines while you have this all apart. And not just the ones under the hood...replace the ones at the rear / tank as well. Replace the fuel filter....use 20-50 oil, with high zddp content, or use a zddp additive...I don't care too much for synthetics, but that is me...I am considering Amsoil tho'
I am in a similar stage with my 78... Ahead of you a little bit...I need to reinstall my tank, and try to fire her.... Good luck

Hi jackforey,
Congrats, thats a nice car with potential, but looks like lot of work to get it in shape. Although, this is the place to get lots of help / advice with that, i certainly needed it and got lots of it from some really knowledgeable members here. Standard stuff: Make sure your fuel lines are in good condition and maybe just be sure and replace them. Clean all the grounds. Although you have a non-interference engine a new timing belt and maybe water pump. I'm sure members with more knowledge than i have will chime in and add the needed to the list. BTW: What is that sticking up/out in front of the passenger side headlight?

Make sure you get all the vacuum lines installed correctly and not leaking. I had a situation where my car used gas like crazy and would barely go until 1/2 throttle. I could not find the problem. Finally, one day I'm under the hood and I see a small random just hose end lying there. I could hear it sucking vacuum so I stuck a golf tee in it. It was night and day. I still don't know where it went but it ran 100% after that.

Yup, listen to the guys above and add that to your short list, which will get longer. Especially with CIS, they don't do well sitting and not running. You'll "need" to drop your tank and clean it out. Your in-tank fuel pump is probably gone as well.
Make sure to flush out all your fuel lines (hard), then replace all the rubber fuel lines. Remove the small screens on the inlets of the Fuel Distributor as well as the WUR (warm up regulator). Replace all the hose connectors for the intake spider. Replace all the 32 year old vacuum lines while you have the intake apart. Flush your coolant system and replace coolant with Zerex G-05® Antifreeze. Do this after you replace your Timing Belt and Water Pump. Like Ron states stick with copper plugs, no need for irridium. Inspect your cap for cracks as well as the rotor. Replace your spark plug wires, 928 Intl has a good inexpensive "economy" wires. You'll re-use your wire ends that will screw on. As you can see, my suggestions are just the minimum. There will be more stuff once you try and start after doing all I suggested. Green wire will probably be toast as well. Welcome to the board!

Awsome guys thank you for the assistance I will get on that finish up rubbers under the hood then ill get to the tank and fuel distributor before I put the upper intake back on. And yea I need to figure a way to brake into the trunk soon then ill drop all the other liquids. And yes this car sat for soo long that was a rubber boot off of something llol. Well just for support, I am just 18 and I bought this car from a good friend and am restoring it (just to basic operatting order) for a school senior project in wich I have to do something amazing, and my budget is sadly limmited to that of a full time senior with with 2 part time jobs one at autozone. So is standard rubber hozing good for fuel.

Agreed. You need to start here at my Common Fixes thread. It will state the correct type (30r9) hoses you'll need.

Jack,
Does the external fuel pump even work? My experience, especially since the advent of Ethanol additives, is that the fuel pump will not work after sitting for an extended period of time. (Note: these cars like to be driven and driven hard.) You will need to make yourself a relay jumper from a piece of wire and 2 crimp on spade connectors. (I also put a switch in mine to easily turn the power off and on as I need it) Download the relay/fuse chart for your model year car from 928 SPECIALISTS ONLINE STORE - 30,000+ 928 Parts - 928 SUPERCHARGER KITS!. You're young and will find it there. If you were older, I would probably have to direct you a little more. ![]() On the chart, it will tell you which relay is the fuel pump relay. Pull that relay from the Central Fuse panel. Look at the relay. It will have a diagram that corresponds to the male spade terminals on the bottom of the relay. If you look closely at the bottom of the relay next to the spade terminals, you should see numbers such as 30, 86, 87 etc. Install one end of the jumper that you have made in the female terminal on the Central fuse panel that corresponds to the relay terminal 30. Install the other end of the jumper wire to the female terminal on the Central fuse panel that corresponds to the relay terminal 87. This will complete the circuit for the fuel pump and the fuel pump should begin pumping regardless of the key position. You should hear a hum or a sound from the rear of the car. The jumper will give you time to go to the back of the car to listen closely and you may even use your hand to feel the cover for a hum if you can't feel it. Make sure that you remove the jumper wire when not using it to test the fuel pump!!! The fuel pump will continue to run and pump fuel until you remove the jumper wire. The normal relay and key operation only runs the fuel pump for about 3 seconds if the car doesn't start. (Its a safety feature in case of crash) But 3 seconds is not enough time to hook up and run to the back to check the operation. That's why I suggest a jumper. Honestly, I will be surprised to hear that your fuel pump still works after sitting for so long, but I'm wishing you luck.

Welcome, nice project!
When you are looking for parts, Roger at 928sRus has been great, I recommend giving him a chance. Pelican also has a lot of parts. Most parts have a long number stamped in them and you can use that to search Pelican for the part. Or, you can give Roger a description of what you need and he seems to be great at helping you find it. I haven't bought it yet, but the guys have been recommending the Morehouse CD from Roger that has all the diagrams you could ever want included in it. For now I have been using the following places for diagrams: Manuals - Porsche PORSCHE 928 FACTORY SERVICE MANUALS AND WIRING DIAGRAMS Porsche Original Parts Catalogue - Parts and Diagnostic Information - Porsche Service - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

Welcome to the group. Stuff a rag in EACH of those intake ports.
Where in the world are you that getting an old Porsche running is a senior project? Money is great to have, but what is essential on a 928 is patience. Take your time, take lots of pictures, and ask first here if you aren't totally sure how to proceed. Trying to start it a few times and running that gunky 3 year old fuel through about $2k of sensitive fuel injection parts was not a good idea. |
