Harmonic balancer removal

Not sure why but I had been really nervous about removing the pulleys and harmonic balancer off my 32v. I had read that it could either be really easy or an absolute nightmare.

Anyway, used a 2-leg, 6" puller last night and they came off with ease - phew!

Getting closer to that water pump by the day. BTW - when they built these cars, did they start with the water pump and build everything around it - seems like it to me.

That was a really bad idea. There is an inner and outer piece to the balancer with a rubber type damper section in between. If it's stuck enough the outer piece can detach from the center. Hopefully you didn't damage it. Pulley are just steel, they will be fine.

No, it took no force at all with the puller. In hindsight, I probably couid have done it without a puller but was expecting it to be stuck. I tightened the puller by hand and she slid right off like butter.

Yeah they can sometimes be a bear. My S was very easy, but my Euro was a struggle. Had to do the rock back and forth method using a screwdriver. Pete is right on the money as well. Just do a good inspection before re-installing. Also, make sure to put it back the correct way. You'll read many posts of those putting it back backwards. Just make sure you can read the numbers as you face the engine from the front.

I have never noticed the balancer was not solid !! I have always used a puller on them so I'm lucky I guess. Glade I read this as I will look closer next go around.

It's usually all painted, including the rubber part

Yes, many are two piece with the rubber in between. I think a new one for the 928 is $600!!!!!
