5-Speed extraction

Ok so I have finally gotten around to pulling out the transaxle of my 84 928. The suspension is removed and I'm ready to pull it out. My first inclination is to leave to t-tube in place (thats how the wsm suggests) but I can not for the life of me separate the t-tube from the trans housing. It seems like its glued or fused. So I decide to take out the t-tube and drive shaft and trans as one. Take the clutch housing apart to find 4 17mm bolts, 2 east to remove the other two are from what I can tell impossible.
So either way I can get this done is fine with me any advice on either issue.

PS I did of coarse remove the four bolts from the t-tube to the trans case and the one for the shaft and the one for the shift linkage.. ;)

did you remove the rear pinch bolt at the transaxle collar?

there are also 2 pinch bolts at the short shaft for the clutch.

NOTE The transaxle is held to the TT with 6 bolts,
4 of them are easy to see the other 2 are on the top side of the TT

NOTE removing the trans axle away from the TT can cause damage to the input shaft of the transmission , this will effectively bend the 5 th gear shaft.
this happens when the transmission isnt pulled staraight out ,
thats why its suggested to remove the TT and trans as a unit

Yes the one at the transaxle side I did remove and yes you are correct there are 6 bolt not four all having been removed. Transaxle just seems fused to TT. Weird.....

As for the pinch bolts up front I have yet to remove because of my inability to get to the two top bolts, well I can get a wrench on them but can't move wrench.

At this point I would just assume remove the wrong deal as to not risk bending anything but I'd take which ever option I can make work.

Thanks again for your assistance

more than likely the alignment pins are rusted to the the TT,
this is where you need to be careful;
as side loading the TT can bend the input shaft.
I would remove the TT and trans as a unit,
and separate them on the floor with the TT supported

Thats where my mind is too. Any advice on getting to the two upper 17mm bolts in the clutch housing?

Not saying its a good idea or not, just a suggestion.

I managed to get the top 2 TT to bell housing bolts loose with the clutch pack in place (need just the right size wrench to get any swing), but couldn't see getting them back in and torqued properly - so I ended up removing the clutch pack. Very easy with that out of the way.

Also, I would put the rear TT to transmission bolts back in before dropping the unit to prevent it from breaking free while lowering it and stressing the input shaft. Then take it all apart while on the ground and properly supported.

Ok I'll look into what it takes to remove the clutch pack.
Just wondering though what would be the harm putting the bolts back in from the other direction?

Stanley makes a 3/8 drive ratchet handle for which you twist the handle to turn the socket.

If you pull off the handle, what's left is a hex shaft. Chuck that into a drill. With that tool I was able to quickly run those top two bolts in and out.

Initial removal and final tightening requires just the right length of extension on a separate socket wrench.
