Dual Headlight Relay / No Low Beams
Happy Xmas Day to all :
Can't find a Link to the Headlights ( 1980 US Model 928 ) I Lost my Low Beams all of a sudden and all the fuses are good with the Panel Clean also Question ? About the Dual Headlight Relay ( 928 618 107 02 ) Fitting Relay Socket's 21 > in fact it is a Large Relay that covers several Sockets at once I think 4 in all it looks like in the Chart Photo 20 / 20A / and 21 The Question ? Does this relay ( 928 618 107 02 ) operate the Switch from Low to High Beam when you work the Dimmer up and down on the turn Signal for Dimming / Switching the lights Question #2 what else might one look for when you lose the Low Beams ? The words " DUAL " Headlight kind of throws me although I have not seen A 928 with other then Single Headlights . I see a High Low Headlight Relay listed for a 1978 and 1979 Model and I confess I wish I had such a straight forward Labeling Like that but the 1980 as mine is different . I Hesitate so far to Remove the Relay as most often when I remove any Relay it just brakes all apart requiring the complete replacement and often the removal of the Socket itself to remove some rusty Relay Prong broken off. Thanks in Advance for any Hints ? Advice as to what to look for to bring back my Low Beams |

It covers only 2 sockets (hence dual realy). It operates the headlight motor to raise lower the pods, the headlight on/off switching and the low/high beam switching. There are different versions by year so make sure you get exactly the same if you replace.
There are 4 fuses one each for: left low, left high, right low, right high - check those first. Alan

![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks Alan : In Fact the relay covers 3 Sockets the Chart show's 20 / 20 A/ and 21 > see Photos The Fuses are Good and Panel Clean Every thing Else works in the electrical I believe I Don't think I will Try to Remove the Relay " 928 618 107 02 " ( 1980 X 1984 ) unless I already Have another one because I am almost sure it will just fall apart like every other relay I Ever removed before I wonder if anyone knows what Posts to Jump for power to LOW BEAM then I could Jump them from the Back side of the Panel rather then remove the Relay as a Test IE : ( Example ) Jump from 87 x to 30 for Low Beam ? Well - if you start believing me maybe we can try that - ITS TWO RELAY SOCKETS!
I don't know where you got that diagram but its a bunch of crap - throw it away! Relays for all years are numbered in roman numerals and not at all in that sequence. There are no half-relay bases - but apparently there are half-assed diagrams. The diagram you posted started as a late model (1985+) CE panel that is totally different from yours - with a chunk simply cut out of the middle & crappy & wrong labels trying to make it look like an earlier panel. It now has the wrong number of fuses for either panel and too few connectors for either panel too... its a bad joke. Below are the correct diagrams for both types - you can figure out what was done... Don't believe everything you see on the internet. The one shown below is from a '78 - it had two separate HL relays - yours has a combined double relay there in XIX-XX Lets start over.. If you connect terminal 30 on the socket to either 56a or 56b you will activate the headlights. 56a is high beam, 56b is low beam. Use a jumper with an integral fuse (always) in this case rated at 15A. use propper connectors for the jumper - male 1/4" blade connectors. Basic Panel diagram for 1985-1995 ![]() Basic Panel Photo 1978-1984 ![]() If you don't want to remove the relay - leave the headlights off and pull the HL fuses, use a similar jumper (with 7.5A fuse) from power at the top of the panel to the top of the HL fuse connector (fuse 26[left lowbeam] /27 [right lowbeam]) (use appropriate female blade connector for the fuse holder blade). Hello Alen
Its not about believing you ? Its about the Chart on the Net from " Porsche 928 - 928 International " Your Correct the Board only has 2 Sockets I assumed the Chart was correct |

Dielectric Grease
Decided to Bite the bullet and Pull the Dual headlight Relay .
Required me to also pull the Fuel Pump Relay however since I had already replaced that relay I Knew it would come out with Battery disconnected Took about 15 mins to slowly pry out the Dual Headlight relay just a Bit at a time rocking it back and forth with a flat screwdriver under the edge As Expected the Relay was all covered with Green Crude and the prongs dark with electrical Corrosion . Used a Dremel with a small wire wheel and had the Prongs looking like new in 5 min's or so . Took some Old Prongs and worked it in and out of the sockets and cleaned up the sockets. applied " Dielectric Grease " with a Que Tip to each Prong and replaced the Relays hooked up the Battery and made sure it was fully charged Lights work Just fine now Best thing I learned here about the Relay was how to jump it as a test although after seeing how Dirty it was did not get to that stage somehow the Dual Headlight relay was " NOT " Rusty on the Prongs or I would have never got it out without perhaps replacing the sockets like I had to do with other Relays not that that's really a hard job Once again thanks Forum |
