Smog Pump rebuild?

Can it be done or is there a company that does it. My Smog Pump siezed on my Euro today. It had a real bad bearing noise prior.

Place on ebay wants $100, looks like the same place maybe in Mira Loma that has the water pump parts.

Google hits a few threads of DIY rebuilds, be careful with the vanes, and replace the bearings, some took it to an alternator shop to get the bearings pressed.

(when I had one) I changed the front bearing on mine. The one in the rear was odd and couldn't be matched and i couldn't find a pn for it. So I just lubed it and threw it back together.

Thanks guys. eBay sounds tempting. I may take mine out and see how hard it is to replace the bearings myself. Or maybe not.

It was kind of a show last night when it seized up, screeching noise then lots of smoke as it fried my Pump Belt.

If it seized it may not be the bearings. There are spring loaded vanes inside, IF they wore down enough they may have come out of there slot and wedged agaist the housing. You can have my gutted one if you want.. (doesn't pump air)

NOTE the smog pump may be damaged with water or chemical cleaners ,
be careful about washing the pump as usually the front bearing can seize,
if you do get the pump wet then add some engine oil to the front shaft prior to spinning the pump.
Note the vanes should not be lubricated as they are supposed to run dry

Huh, Riverside not far from where I used to live, or far from Mira Loma, wonder if the companies are related.

Same company - I have researched them before - chinese rebuilder. IIRC the riverside drop off address is almost a drop box at a recycling depot.!

Leo, How did this turn out?

My smog pump bearing is in a bad way, just happened. After the engine gets to idle with sporadic noise. Restart, and I get a 1 knock sound then bearing noise continuously.

I honestly don't remember. I think I just found one used on eBay. My Euro has been down for so long, I forgot I even had this issue.

Hey Mark,

Here's what I did on my 79 when I had to replace the air pump.

Thanks Raymond for the link. I did read your posts and then looked at 928intl and 78-79 are listed as separate pump than the 80-95 so I wasn't sure at that point.

Thanks Mike for the push. If I had the time I would and am thinking about it. My present work and chores out weigh my desire to accomplish this right now but.......

.....A friend did offer me this 84 Euro smog pump. Would this fit? If it spins is it good to go?

I do remember that I was able to pass smog without the smog pump pumping air into my Cat. My Euro is a special case as I put a US motor in it and it has all the Euro CIS. Heads are different so when I had the Diverter Valve pumping air into the head, I caused a huge air leak. I put a block in the vac line that controls the Diverter. With how well the new Cats are, you really don't need the pump anymore. You could remove the innards of the pump, slap a new bearing in it and be done.
