t-stat failure design

are the typical/stock tstat designed to stay open when/if fail?. is there one that will stay stuck open if fail?.

I think there is some difference between years, but as the Tstat heats up the plunger blocks a bypass so the flow is through the radiator. Not sure if there is a way it always fails, but fail = overheat sounds bad.
