Time for some Reupholstering
Has anyone tried reupholstering their seats themselves? The seats in my 84' 928 definitely need some work. Being a college student, I would like to do the job myself. Where should I look to buy the right leather for the seats for a reasonable price? What type of leather do I need for reupholstering Porsche seats? Any advice would be very much appreciated.
![]() Secondly, the dashboard needs a lot of work as well. It looks like the 928 has a plastic dashboard installed? My thoughts are to fill the cracks with some kind of epoxy, sand it smooth, and use contact cement to glue some vinyl to the smooth surface to finish it off nicely. Any thoughts about doing this? I am thinking that epoxy would be best for filling in these cracks since Bondo would crack over time? ![]() Thanks for the advice! |

sbrinz,
Have you ever done ANY upholstery work before? I have had 2 sets of seats done by two different professional upholsterers that had never done 928 seats before. Both times I was told that neither would ever do any 928 seats ever again and please do not refer any 928 friends to them for seats. Not to dissuade you, but that doesn't sound like the kind of job that a casual upholsterer would want to start with. Rob Budd (www.classic9leathershop.com)sells seat recover kits. (same ones he installs just without the installation) I think Dean Fuller(on this forum) was thinking about recovering seats. You might give these guys a shout for guidance. Good Luck.

Thank you for the replies. It looks like the upholstery kit for the seats might be the best way to go. I will post pictures of what I come up with.

Three options are pretty functional;
Throw on a set of cheap covers that suit you, and tell everyone you want to preserve the originals. Look for a decent pair of used seats, usually from a nice wrecked car. Save your money and send the seats to Rob or Paul and have them done right, install isn't a trivial job AFAIK. I'm not a college student, but I also suggest working on all the running and driving issues prior to interior work or a new stereo. My 85 Euro S looks worse, but runs like snot (this is good) with a fairly short list of mechanical stuff to do. |
