Shift linkage
Any trick to replacing the bushings in an OB rear shift linkage? I ordered new bushings (don't have them yet) and have my linkage out.....just noticed that the bushings have a shoulder, which is in the inside, ( the old ones crumbled in my hands) and looks to me like the pin would need to be pressed out and pressed back in...right or wrong?
I am also having an internal debate on weather to replace it with the newer style, like Carl has, or just go back stock.....what you guys think?

Ron,
We should hook up, you're nearish to me and I know a lot about those early cars. I'm not exactly sure which bushing you're replacing, a pic is worth a thousand words my friend.

It's the rear shift coupling.
Carl's upgraded one.... ![]() I have mine out, just debating on replacing bushings, and letting her ride, or save my dimes to get a new one. I am leaning towards repairing, since I already ordered bushings.....just don't know how to replace them...lol...I don't have them yet anyway, just planing ahead. Where you located? Pm me....

Ron,
If the metal parts show no signs of degradation I'd rebuild em. I know you have the urge to "replace" everything that's suspect due to the age of the car, but TRUST ME.. there will be plenty of places you won't be able to save money, so take the opportunity when you can. I'm in the Zebulon area, about 15 mins east of Raleigh just off 64, 1st exit after the 64/264 split. I'd guess we're a bit over an hour apart, depending on where in CG you are. There is a rather large RDU/central NC928 group, I'd guess at least 40 cars of all ages/condition. We are a pretty knowledgeable group and generally happy to lend advice/helping hand when we can. You need to go out to Koffee Klatch at Brier Creek on a Sat am if you havn't yet. you can reach me at rixter@rennlist.net I'm gonna run to Rob's tomorrow by 96/42 to check out and go thru his new ride, noted below in his new addition thread. You're welcome to tag along if you like, or just let me know if you want to come out here to the house sometime, though I'd love to come see that early US spec of your's. My guess is it's about the 275th 928 made, so there are some things you're going to need to know that aren't in the manuals.

I'm booked tomorrow and next weekend, I'll get with ya after that sometime, thanks...I'm about 2 hrs from Raleigh, so we are probably about 1.5 +\-
Mine is pretty early....has quite a few different parts and pieces than later OBs that I have found so far...19th off the line according to Jim Doerr....not sure if that is total, or US line, or what.... I have had some desire to drop in n the Raleigh crowd, but work most Saturdays, and lack the motivation to get up early enough ![]() I'd love for you to come by....I'll get with you after Labor Day weekend! I have fixed a lot already, and I am just barely getting started. You gone through my threads on here or RL? I have posted quite a bit of my adventure to this point.... Oh....do you know, I'm guessing the center pin gets pressed out and back in for bushing replacement?

Yes, just press out the cross pin while supporting the fixed half with a 3/4 (19mm) socket. You can use an eight inch vise if you don't have an arbor / hydraulic press.

Thank you....my vise wouldn't open enough, but the shop next to my work has a press they'll let me use....
