Cosmetically, nothing
If it is a true Euro S, it haz "ZZZ" in the VIN, and it has a 16V 4.7L engine with 310HP. If it does NOT have "ZZZ" in the Vin, it has an anemic 32V 5.0L engine with 288HP

Euro S in an auto not my first choice. I would not own a 928 with an auto without something like a stroker for more cubes and torque, or boost for more torque.
I know what you are talking about regards old legs and clutches, but clutch on a 928 especially the early dual disc don't require much effort. Lic shows on this listing as 5SQR792 (for reference), smog history does NOT look good. Many fails, but also look at the timing of the passes, car has sat, and been sold several times in last 10 years. Note the top smog test is two months ago, which could be smog check getting it "ready" for sale, but just as likely its the current owner buying the car, again, not a good sign.

Euro has a turn signal behind each front wheel and a fog light to the left of the license plate in the rear.
Euro is 16v with an aggressive cam, US is 32v with a mild cam and mild tune, both are rated for the same performance by Porsche. US can easily get a NICE bump in performance with chips, both benefit from a better exhaust. Calif can be tough with smog inspections. NO is hard to meet on many Euro's. My 85 Euro S 5 spd just failed smog and I am in the process of throwing money at it to get it passed. I like the Euro S cars, the feel of the cam kicking in like a turbo makes them fun in a 5 spd. Auto didn't do much for me, but I drove mine only briefly before parting. If you are solid in the auto camp I would look for either an S4, GTS, or stroker that have lots of torque. |

thanks for the help
yeh i really want an auto to cruse around in. I dont car if the car is less fun to drive than a stick. I always felt the 928 was more of a Grand Touring car rather than a true sports car. If I want to drive fast and deal with shifting I will take the 911. 2400 pounds and 260hp.

You can always tell the anti-Auto guys here, ehemike. But once you get over 40, an Auto is just fine. Shifting was great as a teen and into the twenties, but I am over it. If you want to get spirity, do the Kickdown Down Bypass Mod and use the Auto Stick to down and up shift.

I don't know if it is the age - although you are probably right - but IMHO automatics are perfect for GT / larger luxury cars. A 914-6 needs a stick, a 928 does not.

Vehicle Test History
My US 83 and Euro 85 are 5 spds, and drive like muscle cars, but still handle like a 928. With an auto I'd just as soon drive our Lincoln Continental with a smart 4 spd auto and 285 hp, which virtually never gets floored, but its still there when called for. Its smooth and quiet with double seals on the doors and a air suspension. That said if I had a stroker in a 928 I might prefer the ease of running a automatic. If I was looking for a single car, again maybe I would consider an S4 auto, but down to one car I'm not sure if reliability might be my top concern. I would even favor a stock US over a Euro S with an auto, as its MUCH more likely to find a very nice condition US 928 than a Euro S. |

I have an auto and it's just fine. I drove many a stick shift but for ease of driving especially in city traffic, the auto is the way to go. Actually, stick shift is on it's way out and is not even an option on many new cars.

Rudy and I agree, the 928 works awfully well with the automatic.
Most of the time I prefer it. Right now we have one manual at my house, its an 84 Euro with an easy-shifting late model transmission. It works best and is most fun in the mountains. Otherwise, the automatics are so much less frustrating to drive. Too much shifting and quite a bit of clutch work is required to drive the manual in traffic. On 944 and 951, different story for me, those manuals are perfect for the engine and car. Much less of a hassle, maybe due to gearing and less shifts required, even in stop and go traffic. I was alternating days during the week, one day with the 944, next with an 84 USA manual 928. I loved the 944 days. Other folks swear by the manuals in the 928. Best combo ever for me is 84 16V USA car with an 89 automatic. It has the 2.52 gear ratio and the 2nd gear start (though for spirited motoring it has instant downshift to first with heavy pedal). Its awesome, even with the lighter horsepower engine it has. My daughter and son in law claimed that car, and it resides 14 hours away from me in Virginia Beach. I miss it. That means to me, extrapolating, that the 89 32V car with original automatic transmission would be a great car. But the various configurations of Euro high hp 16V car with an original 3 speed or 4 speed automatic can't be much worse. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

As much as I respect all of our opinions, its a very good idea to actually drive a few 928's to see what feels right for you.
OTOH it might take months of actual ownership before a preference starts getting strong. For most of us it has gotten to be a strong preference. |
