1984 928S brake pad recommendations.

Hello All!

I've had my 928 about a week now and have started listing the projects I need to do and what priority. As I was driving it a bit I noticed a bit of a dragging sound on the right rear wheel. I popped off the wheel and found my brake pad is worn down to nothing. The rotor seems ok, but the pads will need to be replaced. I looked in the parts list and there are quite a few options for break pads. Do any of you have recommendations for a brand or style to stick with? I don't want to go cheap, but I don't know if I need the super expensive ones either. I also had some thoughts of doing the big break kit at some point down the road. I'd love to know your thoughts on this. Thanks.

Anthony

Bought Cool Carbons right here on Pelican with great results. I use the CC's on the 928 and BMW.

Pagids are also a very known racing brand.

Also, not sure if your parking brake pads are in the rotor like mine are, but check those as well. Mine were rotted off.

I didn't take the rotor off yet, but I have no parking brake stopping action at all. I am sure I will need to do those also.

My Euro was missing 80% of the parking brake parts inside the rotor. 928 Intl will hook you with good used parts if need be.

I've heard good things about PBR brand pads. Haven't tried them myself though.

I found the Cool Carbons for the front, but not the rear. I'd like to keep them the same mfg if I can. I'm thinking of just going with the Hawk Performance ones.

Stock S brakes are fine even for most track use, I go with what a trusted vendor has cheap and recommends. For street use I would look more at quiet and low dust, track pads may not be very effective until warmed up.

This is pretty much what I was going to post. Track pads on a street car? Why?

Your e-brake "pads" are shoes actually, the hub or hat of the rotor acts as the drum.

If you wore one side down to the point it is making noise is the other side worn that far as well? If you have one really worn pad and the other isn't you probably have a sticking caliper.

Rotors are that pricey either. I had a sticky caliper on my 83s, I just went ahead and did both rear calipers, pads, and rotors. I don't think I spent more than $400.

Out of curiosity, did you use rebuilt calipers? If so, from where?

I used EBC pads, last time I did the brakes on my 84'.

I installed 4 new vented & slotted rotors, along with the EBC "Redstuff" pads all around. They make a really nice set of brake pads. Been very happy with them. Very little "fall off" while braking hard, too...

Ok, I have my front pads, rear pads, front wear sensors, rear wear sensors, and parking break pads. Do I also need damping plates?

The front pads were almost new so I left them alone. The rear pads were totally shot, one specifically was causing the scraping noise. I managed to get tha spacers off and got the parking break adjusted and working. Now I have a bad squeal from the same wheel (right rear) that started this whole project. I'm going to take it off again tomorrow, clean and re-grease everything, then put some anti squeal stuff on the back of the pads. I'm hoping it's not a caliper or rotor. What do you guys think?

Did you turn the rotor and are your using the same composition pad? My guess is the old pad material on the rotor isn't allow the new pads work properly. Also make sure the the emergency brake components are assemble and adjusted properly. The actuation mechanism if it' s not right can hit the rotor.

I did not turn the rotor as it did not feel grooved. I do not know the composition of the old pads. The left rear seems to have no issues with either of those things, just the right rear that already had a problem with the last pads. Parking brake components are ok as far as I can tell without taking the disk off. Thanks for the ideas though.
