Timing belt/Water pump coming up again soon
Hey All,
I have an 84 US and I did my WP/TB about 2 years ago. I replaced everything.. all rollers, gaskets etc... I've put almost 45K on it since then so another change is coming up. I just noticed on 928Intl they have Geba water pump. Anyone have any experience with these? Thanks -Dan

It's where I got mine, but not sure of the brand. Just verify the impeller is the plastic one. I did mine about 3 years ago and it was plastic.

I am wondering, if one has done the TB and pump job before and the car now has say 50K more miles since, is it necessary to again replace the WP?? Seems the WP should last a lot longer. Does anyone know the life of the WP itself??

I think it's more of a while your in there thing. Especially since most of our cars don't have good history. If you did the last one yourself, then I would say let it go till the next TB swap.

That was my thinking as well. My car still has time to go before the next TB. I did replace everything last time. In fact the original pump looked fine but only had 38K miles on it. I did replace it with a new Laso, I think it was. The TB was Gates.

That's the plan... Belt only. That is unless the pump is leaking or the shaft is loose..
Funny.. In a little over 2 Years I racked up almost 50K on a 30 year old 928... Is that awesome or what?

I would be hesitant on not replacing the pump while you are in there, but if it checks out I would probably wait until the next change. Sounds like its not gonna be long until you are in there again anyway! ![]() |

Was the one you swapped in a metal or plastic impeller? Thinking about this now with the mating block impeller surface could be damaged (if metal), you want to be sure there is no play to minimize risk of damage. The normal clearance is about 0.03"

To be honest I'm not sure. I bought the one from Laso and I'm pretty sure I bought it here from our host. Are lasso's typically plastic or could it be either.
If there's any play I'll bite thee bullet and swap it out.

Cost of a gasket to pull the WP and have a look, and nothing special happens by removing and reinstalling it. 84 is non interference, so I would not worry about doing it exactly at 50k miles or really anything else as long as the belt looks good and is tracking well.
50k miles in a couple years in awesome, but didn't used to be unusual. Many owners were professionals with long commutes that you had to pry their cold dead fingers off the steering wheel to get them to give up the 928. |
