1986 928S worth? Pics this time
While I'm dealing with another guy on the '81 Euro, found this '86 928S and took some pics.
More familiar with the older 928's ('78-'81) so would really appreciate advice on this one. Asking $2500 but says he's negotiable (better be!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He says it runs when gas is poured in, but has fuel/pump issues. Again, a couple hundred in back DMV fees/penalties. He says it was brought back from Germany, but does not appear to be Euro, right? Anything to really watch out for beside the usual? Thanks, Bob |

I'm not sure if it is or was cool for me to be posting photos of someone's VIN or license plate without their permission. What do you guys think?
Didn't even think about that until I was reviewing the post. Bob |

He says runs when gas is poured in. Forgot to mention has a salvaged title so what would be the value if this ended up be parted?
Because I can't hear it run very long or drive it to see how anything else works, what $500/$750/$1000/$1500? Don't think I'd pay anymore than that. Bob |

sounds like it is going to need some work before you can drive it. probably new fuel pump and a thorough cleaning of the fuel system. it has a US vin number. I sold my 86 about 6 months ago for $2800, had a newer paint job, auto, ran good, but needed little things.

This seems like a parts car to me. You could put work into making it run/drive but people will avoid it like the plague if you try to resell is due to the salvage title.
In general a salvage title takes 50% of the value off right off the bat. "Rebuilt" isn't AS bad IME. You will put a fair amount of money into the fuel system, timing belt, tune up, other fixes to make it a driver. Then you have to find someone willing to put up with the salvage title. I would offer him $1000 and see what he says if you have the time/space/willingness/ to part it out. |

Spoke to the owner, says he bought it a couple of weeks ago not knowing what he was getting himself into. By the decal under the hood it's a 5.0L 302 32v 4cam auto.
While looking up the fees on DMV (thanks for the link/info Dano) aside from $181 in fees, states it has a Junk title. So I'm going to see what his or my pain threshold in terms of price is going to be but again, like the '81 Euro, won't kill me to walk away from both. Funny update on the '81, called the guy to remain in touch, just happened to ask why he didn't non-op the car so he wouldn't accrue all the fees and penalties? I kind of didn't hear too much after...."when I went to prison..........." ![]() Bob |

You need to add things up:
Timing belt and water pump: $5,000 Intake refresh: $3,000 Pay someone to remove fuel injectors, send out for cleaning and then reinstall: $2,000 New fuel lines: $1,000 Somewhat factory quality paint job: $40,000 Interior refresh: $15,000 Suspension, steering and brake refresh: $15,000 Repair "termite" damage under heads: $20,000 Pay someone to remove pod and repair any dashboard electrical gremlins: $4,000 Used tires from the junk yard...4 X $10 each: $40 Other misc. repairs such as sun roof, locks, climate controls etc. $12,000 You'll have $117,040 invested into this car which will then be worth $5,000. Now take another $2,000 off because it's a salvage title...he should be paying YOU about $115,000 to haul it away. ![]() Of course if you do your own wrenching you could knock off about $110,000 and have a decent driver with enough left over for a good at 10' Maaco paint job. Still too much hassle imo, unless you want a project.

Parts car only .. Plenty of 928's available on the west coast for you to choose from .. The 81 euro and this car just seem like headaches .. Why buy a salvage title 928 ?

This means it's got some goodies from an S4. Anyways, I would buy it for no more than $1200. All those fuel delivery issues can be sorted. Someday I would love to get one of these 86.5's. Oh I forgot to also mention, I absolutely hate red cars.
Hard to read this vin, but is it wpojbo924gs362378 ??

This is one of the things I've read here before, but don't know anything about.
What is the cutoff to making a car a midyear car? What does that mean for this car and is that more desirable? MP- the vin is: wpojbo924gs862378 Thanks for the opinions Bob |

I'm all in for projects, but if I can spend less and do less that's even better. It looks like that in the west coast you can be patient and find GOLD. good luck

If the seller says nothing when you are obviously taking pictures of license and vin, I would not worry about it. Posting the vin works well at preventing secrets from staying secret.
US 86 with last 4 digits of vin 1000+ is 86.5 with S4 brakes and suspension. 3uod325 smog history. Make Model Year Date / Time Pass / Fail Certificate PORSC 928 1986 05/03/2004 03:53 p.m. P FK495002C PORSC 928 1986 04/23/2002 02:48 p.m. P EO746060C PORSC 928 1986 04/24/2000 04:58 p.m. P DU152731C PORSC 928 1986 10/05/1998 02:48 p.m. P DE630020C Good. Its red, the paint might buff out VERY nice. Seats look good, maybe very good. Fair chance the stuff preventing it from starting are all things that should be replaced anyway. Bad. Junk title is worse than salvage, I would want details before considering fixing it. Hood and hatch have alignment issues. Its a parts car in my opinion, but as an 86.5, if the parts are original, its got value. |

I'd love to get my hands on a late 86 parts car, so I would pay 1200-1500 without a lot of thought.
I probably wouldn't make it a project car with the title as it is.

Dave, that's very close to what I've offered and haven't heard back. Both cars have owners who see Porsche written on the back and see $$$.
The 86.5 owner may have put more money out for it and why he won't come down. The '81 Euro I also haven't heard back and will post the sellers info in case someone here may be interested in the car or the engine. Hopefully he won't go back to prison while you're negotiating. Bob |
