Starter Bolt Up on Different Block
Hi,
I need some information and/or assistance. I have a 1983 928 S (automatic). The vehicle has the original 4.7 engine. I recently started to have serious overheating problems and after trying to repair, it was discovered that the block was cracked. As such, I obtained another engine block which was newer and I am in the process of changing over the intake manifold etc. since my original engine came with mechanical fuel injection. However, when we came around to the rear of the engine by where the starter bolts up, on the new block there is no threading for the bolts to connect the starter/plate for the starter. I have attached photos of the two engine blocks and the plate. The original had four (4) bolt holes and notice that the recently obtained block does not. How do I go about connecting the starter to this new block? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Pic 1 and 2 is from my original block. Please note the four (4) bolt holes on the inside left hand side. Pic 3 is from the new block which does not have the bolt holes. The newer block was newer in miles or year? Some 4.7 auto or 5 speed ?

the new block is from a 5 speed hence the manual flywheel.

What is the motor ID on the new block? Should be stamped into the top of the front on a flat spot, M28/???????

it looks like you have a an older block as it has no provision for the starter mounting bracket.
The older version engine used the lower bell housing to mount the starter.. Find the engine code under the top radiator hose this will let you know what you have VS what you bought

before you ask all of these questions lets find out what you have VS what you brought, engine codes will answer these questions

Not the block I would be using, the M28/12 is a Euro S block, the 15 iirc is plain vanilla US block with less compression and a 95mm bore instead of 97mm. Best option is a US 85/86 short block with the pistons fly cut for two valve, or another Euro S block.

Oh and btw I am in the Caribbean so any block that I have to get involves much effort on my part for shipping etc. If I use this block, how does the starter bolt up? And how does one go about bolting up a starter to the M28/15 block? |

Kjet only connects to the heads, so anything that works with your Euro S heads in terms of a block should be fine.

zerogen - you will need the lower bellhousing part from an early car (78-79-80-81-82) like the one in the pictures - this one is from a manual so it has the hole for the clutch slave - if you could find an automatic one ..great - if not you could always block off the slave hole and I think it would still work - that is unless the flywheel on an auto is different diameter than manual - would need others to chime in and verify that - the part number on this one is 928.116.411.6R - don't know what the auto part number is - good luck
