Locked Out
Oh boy.
Just picked up an 85 US car. In the garage, tinkering with various items. Both keys are hanging in car. Didn't think much of it - when locking up at times on drive home, central locking appeared inop. No remote fobs or anything present. Been in/out of the car for a couple of weeks without incident. Randomly walked up to the passenger door to open it and heard "whirrr". Suddenly, unprovoked, both doors locked with keys inside. Hatch and hood, too. Now what? And why? Go to dealer with title and order new key? Call locksmith? Secret tricks? |

928 Locked Out -
Hey Mike - Of course one option is always to try and find a reasonable locksmith. There are SOME around who will tackle a locked Porsche, Mercedes, etc... using a small airbag type gizmo called an "Air Wedge". It is initially deflated and gradually pushed down into the door past the rain seal near the lock. Once in place a small hand pump inflates it slowly until the lock button begins to move.
Option 2 - I've used a "Slim Jim" to open an assortment of non-Porsche-mobiles over the years - so this basic theory should be similar. Someone with more 928 Slim Jim experience may want to chime in...... ![]() Option 3 - Here is also a hardened steel hooked looking tool that sounds like a good idea. Although it may be a bit tedious to accurately center the tip of this tool under the factory lock button on the opposite side of the glass without damaging anything - to me, this looks feasible and the least expensive. 928 opening (unlocking door) procedures - Rennlist Discussion Forums Good Luck, Michael

A AAA driver commented when he saw mine that 928s are a real challenge to get into when they're locked down with the windows up. Good luck!

Well, at 9:28 this morning (actually 9:26, so close) the factory wire jimmy trick worked.
No wedge necessary, just push in on the lower back corner of the window. It doesn't quite go in where the manual makes you think. Would probably never have gotten it without a partially dismantled parts car to practice on. ![]() ![]() |

nice work - comforting to know these can be gotten in to with nothing more than a bent hanger.. right?
