Blown torque tube/drive shaft
Drive shaft on '81 auto went. Car runs but won't drive and makes nasty metal noises. Mechanic friend of mine said it was drive shaft. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Car had recent TB and water pump replaced before I bought it way below market. Doesn't need much else. Suggestions?

Sounds like your in the same boat as me. I need to pull my transaxle on both mine to rebuild the Torque Tube.

If the car won't move at all it's unlikely it's the torque tube. It's a solid metal shaft suspended in bearings. They will get noisy but it always turns. They don't fail like that. Not saying you don't need one too but it sounds like there's other issues.

Torque converter or flex plate. Driveshafts don't break easily and your 81 sure doesn't have the power to do it - unless it's supercharged of course

Find or become an experienced 928 mechanic, mechanics that don't work on lots of 928's tend to assume some expensive things.

All good advice. Since the transaxle is coming off anyways, you need to rebuild the TT.

Start by checking the transmission fluid and torque converter fluid levels. Could also be the coupler either end of the driveshaft have crept or wasn't tightened properly, and the splines have stripped.
