Newbe needs help "Lost in the woods "
Just purchased a 85 928 S with a 5 speed . Deal too good to pass up? So I am now the owner of a non running Porsche 928 I am a Jaguar mechanic and an Old Jaguar mechanic XKs and XKEs old school , Anyway the last owner told me the car was sitting for a while . they tried to get it going by spraying either down the intake and it kicked over, but would not start and run. cked the fuel rail it had gas but not much pressure, I am attempting to jump the relay and see if the pump is working (I can do that) However I went to install a battery which was MIA and discovered that I have three batt connections " one is obvious the pos the other two neg? got me stumped here which one do I connect? one seems to heads along the left hand side of the compartment . ( I'm scared Goober" dunno what to do here I have heard horror stories about batt changeouts. Also heard a lot about "Green wire probs Whee is it and how do I ck it to see if it is OK . Where is the fuel pump located ? is there one or two pumps ? Last Please no jokes about dead cat at midnite swingin over my head chanting to the ghost of F. Porsche. Just kidding .. Any and all Help here would greatly be appreciated.. Regards Mark

Battery is simple. Negative is toward rear of car and attaches outside the battery box just below and left of the rear hatch release. Everything at the front of the battery box should connect to the positive.
Fuel pump is located under a cover at the rear passenger side opposite the muffler. With an '85, the green wire is not part of your system |

Have you done the dead cat thing, yet? ![]() Seriously, congratulations on your purchase. An '85 can be a very nice car with lots of power. If the car has been sitting for a while, chances are that the fuel is gummed up in the injectors. Typically, the fuel pump(s) need to be replaced after sitting for a while. Since yours pumps, I would drain and clean the tank and then using fuel system cleaner, and letting the pump circulate it throughout the system. I can't recall if an '85 has more than one fuel pump, but when you remove the cover, you will see wiring headed back toward the tank for a second fuel pump. If those wires are connected at the tank, you got 2. If they are taped up, you got one. After you get your fuel system nice and clean, jumper both the fuel pump relay and the fuel injection relay. This will remove the relay from the list of potential problems. Just be sure to remove those jumpers when you walk away from the car. (no sense in hydro-locking a cylinder due to a leaky injector). Keep us posted.

Based on your last post all i can say is.... Woaaah please disconnect the battery you have the leads backwards NOTE the short wire thats bolted to the chassis is the ground wire , this exits the rear of the battery box. The terminal that comes out of the front side of the battery box is the positive wire. this wire runs along the bottom of the chassis to the starter

OK I thought that looked factory however it is not an orig German wire must be a replacement i hooked up the POS wire that comes from the front of the batt box through a hole in the front of the box the ground wire I hooked up is a wire that ran along the top of the rear comartment going foward along the left side, The starter tries to crank but draws way too much current and heats up the wire Def. a bad starter . I have a red switch next to my drivers seat if I turn it one way I get nothing if I turn it the other way the starter will try to crank and everything turns on Is this some sort of Batt cut off?I still cannot understand why I have two Neg batt wires? I ordered a rebuilt starter fuel pump and filter .. Now Looking for dead cat. , And or Holy water Note I Never hooked up batt. to wrong terminals Just don;t know which ground wire to hook up.

The Red switch is probably a kill switch by a PO...I wonder if that wire which runs along the left side you mentioned runs up to it?? Try to get some schematics and your VOM out.
Inspect your 14 PIN connector in the engine compartment and the down wires for corrosion. This connector is between your Ignition switch, Central Electrical Panel and Starter, Alt. You may have an Issue in the wires between the 14PIN which run down to the Starter & Alt then to the Bat.

If it hasn't run in 7 or 8 years you might want to pull the plugs and put a breaker bar and socket on the nut inside the front pulley to make sure the engine isn't tight. I'd try that before spending for a starter.

I will do that tomorrow for sure but bought the starter already,. The person I bought it from had it running on either so i am almost sure it is not frozen Sharkhead ? where is this connector located exactly? I need to look into that.

The regional 928 OC rep lives in Charlotte and AirtecHVAC is right down the road. Perhaps you can connect with one of them and slowly build a local network.

The 14PIN is forward of the crossbar before the radiator on the passenger side of the upper inner sidewall.
You will observe a HOT post (Jump Post) just forward of the 14PIN. There would normally be a black plastic shroud covering it (both the 14PIN and Hot Post) with the Post protruding with a separate Black cover. A Large Red wire feeds to the Hot Post from the wire loom which runs down to the ALT, Starter. The other wires in the Loom run down from the 14PIN.

First step, disconnect the battery and figure out what sort of mischief the previous owner has done with the wiring, and put it back to stock.
You car looks a bit familiar to me, post the vin and maybe we can find an old thread from the PO. |
