ATF level

I have a 928 1980 auto, now in the manual I see the 1, 2 , 3 levels on filler but after I warm up the car and shift R N D, D N R and then N. Do I check level while car is still running or do I turn it off and check. I get the max level 3 when it's off but 1 when it's running and warn temp. thx for help

You need to check it with the car running and in neutral or park. Do not over fill.
