Stupid smog

My 83 was due for smog, but I was having issues with a dead battery. Turns out somebody turned the knob on my battery disconnect too far so it came apart, then put it back together upside down so it never disconnected. Found this out a week after swapping a new battery, and noticing the old one sitting in the garage was holding a full charge and measuring almost new (811/850 CCA).

That finally sorted I decided the gas was too old, so I let it idle in my driveway for a half hour until it was coughing. Poured in a gal and half of fresh gas and drove around for half an hour to warm it up. Pulled into the smog place and parked on a down slope, came back 3 min later and it would not start. Nice new battery really spun it over, but a few almosts turned into not firing at all. Put in a gallon and half more gas, nada. put in another two gallons, nada. Upside down in the passenger seat with driving glasses I can't see up close with wiggled fuses and relays, owners manual and fuse chart safely at home so I had no idea what was what. Nothing.

Smog guy finishes up two cars that came in while I was failing to start, and says lets try some starting fluid. You know me, starting fluid never, but he is trying to help so we give it a shot. First time catches a "little"and dies. Second time catches then goes to a super low idle for maybe 10 seconds, then running fine. Passed smog no issues.

*** Never run the fuel all the way to empty, NEVER ***

If this was "your" car Mike, why would "somebody" have turned your battery disconnect too far? Nobody touches my 928's, except me, so I only have myself to blame.

Foot problems, off and on for a couple months, sometimes left, sometimes right, blocks of days where walking more than a few feet was not an option.

I've got a Vitamix 3600, it could start the car.

Disconnect switch is made of two blocks of brass with a big screw with a knob holding it together. One brass piece has a plastic insulator covering one side and the threads of the screw so it only makes contact when the screw is tightened down.

Problem is if the screw is loosened too far it comes out of the threaded portion of the bottom. Push down on the screw without threads engaged and the bottom part falls off. When this happened it was put together upside down so it always made contact.

Side mount battery disconnect. Mine is bolted to the car ground with a big spacer, and other end to the ground strap.
