parts swap ?

will the radiator from a 1988 32 valve swap right into an 84 16 valve - like bolt right in? - same question on the auto transmission - I've heard the later trannys are better but will it bolt right in - thanks

I'd say yes to the radiator. The only difference that I know of is the later radiators do not have the molded flanges on the side tanks to hold the 16 valve fan shroud in place along the middle left and right sides. The top and bottom mounting points for the shrouds are the same though. You should still be able to install it though (I'm currently running a used radiator from a GT in my '84... working just fine even without those little plastic flanges)

The S4 I parted had a trans cooler, and oil cooler. Sooooo dependent on transmission.

This one will fit northern radiator #209628.

IIRC, you can swap the coolers into different radiators while replacing the end caps. Just use the correct replacement end cap during your radiator service.

To the OP: Won't you need coolers on both sides of the radiator, one for oil cooling and one for transmission cooling?

hey stepson - this is a picture of what I took out of the 84 - ports on pass side for trans cooling but no other ports - at least that's where I thought the hoses were going..back to the trans - they turn into metal lines right by radiator and disappear towards back of car but I didn't crawl under and follow them - they were filled with burnt smelling fluid so assumed it was tranny fluid since the trans does not shift correctly - can the end caps be obtained by themselves? - I've been looking for a used radiator that has that pass side cap intact and was going to try to attach it back onto this radiator - if they can be had separately...where would I find one - thanks

^^ that's going to be a hard find. I can't think of aftermarket tanks. The radiators are made by Behr though so that's a lead. I bet if you find them, they are going to be expensive.

Honer,
The oil cooler would be on the driver (left) side and the transmission cooler would be on the right side. I thought all cars after @ 81-or 82 had oil coolers in the radiator. Yours apparently does not.
I have an extra pre-S4 radiator that only has transmission cooler. It has been vatted, and cleaned and has a new (well it was new when I thought I was going to use it a couple of years ago)right end tank on it. This radiator has not been installed in a car since the end tank was replaced.

Does your car have an oil cooler mounted low in front of the condensor coils and radiator? Just curious.

does anyone out there have a bad radiator with an intact right side tank that they would be willing to separate and sell - I would like to experiment and see if a radiator can be pieced together - I've heard of it being done

Honer,
You can buy end tanks from Roger. You would also need a new seal.

stepson - I don't see an oil cooler anywhere up front - i'm more familiar with the 944 cars - on those the oil cooler is bolted to block and coolant flows through it from block - could this engine have a similar setup - if not it's something else to fix - where would the hoses for cooler exit the block - i'll look for them - thanks

The oil cooler lines would exit the engine on the left (driver) side just above the oil filter. They are hardlines initially and head straight towards the left side of the car and then turn towards the front of the car. Once they make the turn they become soft lines.

You've got me wondering now if the oil cooler was an option and not standard.
