Noise/Whine from car - 1988 928

I noticed after driving for about 30 minutes that there was a continuous whine coming from the car. I noticed as the car was stopped or idle. The noise was still present even while moving. It doesn't get faster as the car goes faster, just remains constant.

Any ideas on what the noise could be? I have a video but can't upload it.

How about cluing us in as to where the noise is coming from?

Rear of car -- fuel pump
Front of car -- smog pump, power steering pump, a/c compressor etc.

The noise is coming from the back. It sounds like a buzzer noise that a door makes when it is left open.

Is there a way to determine if it is the fuel pump without bringing it to a mechanic?

The fuel pump cover is between the fuel tank and bumper, can't miss it and it takes about two minutes to remove. Don't even need to jack up the car.
Drop the cover and listen. If it's noisy, replace the pump, filter, tank strainer and the short length of hose from the tank to the pump assembly. Very easy and simple job.

Some cars also have a second fuel pump in the tank, hopefully not yours.

Have somebody else listen at the back when you turn the key on, but don't start. Not certain on CIS, but most run the pump a few seconds.

Passenger seat...wife or girl friend.
Driver seat...wife or girl friend, if they're driving.

Also, does anyone know of a good place to get a warm meal...if my wife reads this...I believe I'll need one.

You deserve to starve, never actually name the cause of the whine, always refer to it as a problem with the passenger side airbag.

After not driving the car for about a week. I started it up and there wasn't a noise any longer. I drove it around for about 30 minutes and the noise is gone. If it was fuel pump, wouldn't it be continuous? Any other way to check the fuel pump without an audible indicator?

I'm new to 928's. I'm usually a 911 guy so I'm still trying to educate myself on the 928's. The car is a lot of fun, but there are a few minor things that need to be done.

I may be way off here, but doesn't the 02 counter do something similar, if not reset?

That is the nature of the fuel pump whine, can be intermittent, probably as it passes some sort of foreign matter. Best practice at this point in car's life would be to remove the pump and filter, also then the tank, clean the tank, replace the screw in strainer at the base of tank, the fuel supply hose leading to the pump, the pump and the after-pump fuel filter.

Complications can enter the mix if the embedded fitting, into which the strainer is threaded, happens to break loose from the tank. That has never happened to me, but to others.

In resurrecting one of these cars, I have always replaced the strainer, pump and filter canister.

BTW, fuel line fires in engine compartment are a known issue with 928 and 944/51 due to hose deterioration that may not be evident. Suggest you do some significant reading/inquiry on this if you've not already addressed it.

Great advice Landseer. This car is very well documented, so I will check to see what has been done and then proceed with your suggestions. I had a 68 Mustang Convertible catch on fire last month, so I definitely don't want another one!

If it's automatic, I strongly suggest you check the flexplate just to prevent thrust bearing failure. The driveshafts tend to move in the couplings resulting in pressure on the flexplate/thrust bearing and ultimately an unavoidable failure.......if you don't check and relieve it regularly.
