David,
These engines are normally very good upwards of 3-400K miles. What is there going on with your engine that would make you think it needs rebuilding?

Aluminum Block -
Hey Dave - Sorry to hear about your thrust bearing problem. A while back when I was initially sorting through a couple of potential 85 - 87 models I almost bought one with a similar issue. Although I've not had to go any deeper into a 928 V-8 than the timing belt/water pump/oil pump/reseal etc... on the front, the heads on the top side and the oil pan/crank bearings/thrust bearing inspection from the bottom - if you have all the spec's I would assume that a rebuild or parts swap would be fairly straight forward.
The main question I'd have would involve whether to try and seat a new set of rings in the (Alusil) silicon impregnated aluminum block..... You may do best to keep the secondary block pistons and rings in their original bores. Just stay close with all the expertise and experience available on the 928 sites and take it slow. Here is a brief write-up on the block material - Porsche 928 V8 Nikasil Cylinder Treatment | Kuhn Performance It is just too bad that there aren't any instructional books on Rebuilding a Porsche 928 Engine around like there are for the air cooled 911 (Otherwise known as The Opposite-Mobile To The 928). The "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" by Bruce Anderson and the "101 Projects for Your Porsche 911" by Wayne Dempsey make up the ultimate 911 Bible. They include a step by step guide into EVERYTHING you would ever need to know about rebuilding the 6 cylinder engine and keep it purring like a kitten. This type of critical information can save your butt and pocket book many times over. By the way - If anyone has ever found this type of aftermarket technical publication on the 928 other than what is available in the factory manuals please chime in. Good Luck, Michael

I am building my '85 32-valve back up right now and have learned quite a lot along the way through research and the kind folk on this forum.
Continue to post questions and I'll pitch in. |

When the thrust bearing goes it puts a lot of metal bits into the oil and typically less than 100% are caught in the oil filter with some going into all the nooks and crannies of the heads and other oil passages, lifters too. Bolting those parts on to a new short block even with a lot of cleaning may still leave metal that will work loose later on.
Check some thrust bearing threads to see how others have proceeded. |
