Rebuilt engine start-up procedure
I plan to restart my rebuilt 32-valve engine this coming weekend. I have a reasonable sense of what to do but want to check in with you guys to make sure I don't miss anything.

hopefully you used STP to fill the oil pump gears, Then fill the crankcase and put oil into the oil filter.
With a freshly charged battery and the plugs removed and the computers disconnected crank it over till the gauge shows pressure, install the plugs , connect the computers, then start the engine have a fire extinguisher handy

I have 8l of fresh Joe Gibbs 15w50 break-in oil and a new Mann filter. I will pre-fill the filter and spin the oil pump to charge the oil passages. To do this, the drive belt has to be off so there's a good few hours work to be done after the lubrication system is charged. If nothing else, this will prove that the oil pump is actually working. I will also lube the cam lobes with moly.
Good tip on unplugging the computers. I will have a fire extinguisher and buckets of water on standby. Wish me luck boys. |

Oil Pressure should come up Quite soon about after some 5 t0 8 perhaps 10 5 seconds intervals of cranking . With the Plugs removed the cranking well be far less intense related to having compression as well as a Tight new motor / Seals / Rings / Bearings and the like dragging with the Cranking . Pre spinning the Oil Pump is Evan a better way as you mentioned As Long as your going to Pre lube the Cam lobes I recommend you also give a shot of light oil on the Valve Stems to allow the Guides to be lubricated during Cranking , ATF would work fine or any light oil . Just shoot some Oil through the V Springs to V Stem to drip down . when Your ready to Light it up don't be surprised if it dies a few times as things become vacuum filled before you get it to Idle . If you get a no start then Check for / fuel / Spark / and cam Timing. Note : If by Chance you have not completely turned over the Motor "by Hand " ( 27 MM Socket on Front Crankshaft retaining pulley Bolt ) Then by all Means do this first ( plugs out ) This well let you know no Valves are hitting should the Cam Timing be wrong . I expect you have done this already ? but what the heck just saying . Wrong Valve Timing Cranked Via Starter Motor would ruin your day for sure .
