1982 928 wierd starting issue
the car will start with starting fluid and stay running and run fine but wont start on its own unless i spray starting fluid to start it.
im stumped ? ![]()

Speaking authoritatively as the world's worst mechanic I have pinpointed--with laser precision, I might add--that you've got a fuel problem. I think. Maybe. Seems likely....
So, what to do? Well, you can... i) do what I do and that's check a couple of things; namely, the fuel pressure (fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and injectors) and hope for the best (this is within my control), or ii) wait for a better answer (not within my control), or iii) have a look at this post 82 928 won't start FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Rennlist Discussion Forums I'm rootin' for you. take the injectors out send them off to withchunter, replace the fuel lines including the one that goes to the return on the fuel tank sender
make sure the tank is clean and you have a good fuel strainer IE a new one if the tank was filled with crud

since i purchased the car this is what has been done
fuel pump new injectors & clamps and hoses fuel filter checked fuel pressure 30 psi cleaned fuel press reg relays and fuses are good i checked for any vacuum leaks put fresh gas with a bottle of tecron the car kicks over and starts and stalls but after a few times it stays running and holds a idle that goes up and down between 800 / 900 rpms and stays running fine. when i give it gas it boggs down and whats to shut off but stays running. i can get it to rev to 6000 rpm sometimes without bogging out. i had the gauge on it when i would rev it up and the psi on the gauge is 30 psi and better when i gave it gas. i saw some posts about changing the temp time switch but wouldnt the time switch only affect the cold start operation and have no effect when its hot ??? i saw a small little filter looking thing on the fuel line by the right rear wheel that i havent changed but not sure what it was. i think theres still some bad gas or crude still in the lines that have to get blown out. im close but no cigar yet , if i missed anything else to check let me know thanks guys ![]()

i have good fuel pressure at the rail even when i throttle the car ?
i think i still have some resudual crude in the system

Rail pressure should track manifold pressure to keep pressure across injectors and flow rates constant.

Some time ago, I had a similar starting issue, it turned out to be the fuel injection relay. Sorry, can't remember the rely number. Good luck !!!

this is my first 82 928 i only had the cis cars. i got the car running but wont start when hot. i replaced all the vacuum lines and noticed the the air flow meter kinda just sitting in the throttle body real loose with just a oring in there. is there a gasket other than the oring ?

No gasket, just the big O ring. The air box holds it down in place.
