Change Morror Glass

1986 Porsche 928 Factory Mirror's
How do you change the Mirror Glass
I have one the Glass got knocked out and I have Extra doors with Mirrors
( wrong color ) and was thinking to change the Glass only .
I see 2 Wires that plug in to Mirror ? I guess to heat the Mirror .
Any Way if anyone knows ? Thanks

use a putty knife and very carefully slide it behind the mirror and pry it away from the housing - start on the outside where there is one clip - then move to inside where there are 2 clips - these clips are similar to door panel clips in that they pull straight out - having said all this I should add that sometimes these mirrors have been in their housings 30 years and are really stuck in there so breaking the glass is a possibility - in my experience you will break the glass about 20% of the time - work slow and spraying some lube on the clips once you can see them won't hurt - good luck

Mirror has three parts the fixed mount on the door and "two piece" plastic insert with the glass glued to it. Glue gets old and the mirror often just falls out leaving the plastic holder tray.

If you have a smooth plastic tray in the mount, then the glass fell out.
If you have a metal tray with three holes for the plastic tray to fit into, then its ready for a replacement tray/mirror.

What I have is
" If you have a smooth plastic tray in the mount, then the glass fell out.

I have 3 holes with about 1/2 inch of round Plastic around the 3 Holes IE: NO Tray !

A Tire Blew Out with Car on Trailer . The Tire Blew off the Trailer Fender and it hit the Mirror of the 928 on Trailer loosing the Mounting a bit . Fender was some several Hundred yards Back on side of Freeway . Mirror Glass " And now I know a Plastic Tray was gone never to be fond by me .

I have 2 Good " White Doors ( I think 83 or 84 have Belt line trim ) with Good Mirrors on them but the wrong Color .
I am looking for a nice flexible Puddy Type Blade rather then a stiff one.

Then I well attempt to remove one from the Mirror .
I am Hoping it well remove without braking . Hummm

Excellent Information here thanks so much , I am wondering if their is a way to loosen the Mirror from the Plastic Mounting Holes ?
Like spray in some Lube . I kind of doubt you can reach the right spot unless I remove the complete Mirror and submerge it in some Lubricant Bath over night .

I usually try to spray some lubricant into the hole on the underside of the mirror housing before I start playing with it. It makes the mirror locking mechanism much easier to deal with.

I believe that I may have an extra mirror tray. PM me.

aluminum - is this is what your looking at? - the 3 clips fit into the holes with arrows - the clips look like the one in the middle of the picture - this is a pass. side mirror - press in on the glass on the upper inside - this will push the lower outside out - I have found this gives you the best angle to get the putty knife in to release the outer clip - probably don't need a flexible knife as you are going to have to pry it pretty good - try spraying some wd40 with a straw around the clip holes - as I said it's iffy - if you can get the clips starting to release go ahead and try a wide screwdriver right at the clip - that way you won't be prying on the glass as much - these mirrors are two laminated pieces of glass - one is mirror the other is the heater - I have seen the heater layer crack while leaving the mirror intact - will work great as a mirror but you lose the heater

Removed the Mirror from some doors I have was kind of Easy

Thanks for the tips a big help
used a Big screw Driver and out it came . Pressure in a few places as I wiggled the Mirror back and forth . SO the Retaining Pins are Metal not plastic as I expected
1 of them came loose from the Heated Tray and I well use some JB Weld and reattach it
to install

good job - can get a little nerve wracking trying to put enough pressure on it...but not too much

Hi Guys

Seems to be 2 threads about this and both end at the same place....

All great stuff...I have got to the end of the thread and yes...done that, done that.... but how do you get the motors out of the housing?? On the underside, there are obviously 2 screws. There seems to be a rubber boot/gater that is surrounding the mechanism. But there seems no obvious (to an idiot like me) as to how to remove the motor. It sits behind the silver plate.... I am at my wits end....
