KLR Problem
SOXNAIL: I have followed your posts with great interest. I am having an intermittent problem (no Spark). It seems to come and go when I remove and re-insert the klr connector or I just move or tap the klr. I am currently using a backup klr which seems to be working, I saw an older post in which you gave some basic troubleshooting tips for the klr. I would appreciate any help you can give me. I have cleaned the contacts, but so far that didn't seem to help. I would like to track the path from pin 9 to 16 and look for bad solder joints. I do have access to a scope.

Hi John,
Question 1: how did you determine it is a loss of spark? The problem I have found more often then not is that the 5V regulator develops issues. It may be a cold joint or internal. If you can have the KLR open and in your car when it is running (if possible) hit the the regulator with a cold spray like carb cleaner or something if the car stumbles or dies then the issue is there. You can also try to wriggle it to see if the car dies. Lets try to eliminate this first then we can get to following the ignition pulse path. Sox

Thanks. I pulled the coil lead and checked for spark. When it doesn't start, there is no spark. I will check the 5V regulator as you suggested. The engine sometimes dies when I move the KLR around

Assuming the regulator checks out....
There are two signals going into the KLR that are needed to produce an ignition event. The ignition pulse and the trigger signal from the DME. You can check to see if they are making it to KLR micro. Using your O scope. Trigger comes in at pin 24 of the KLR connector. Ignition comes in at pin 9 of the KLR connector. On the KLR micro trigger goes in at Pin 4 On the KLR micro ign goes in at Pin 6 On the KLR micro ign comes out at Pin 37 On the KLR micro ign (inv) comes out at Pin 38 See pic you will need a chip clip to safely test the pins on the micro, its easy to have a scope probe slip and short something. Sorry I din't get back to you. I found some corrosion on the connector on the KLR, on both sides, and used a brush and some contact cleaner to remove it. I am not sure this is a fix, since the problem was intermittent but so far it is working.
