I have recently completed a tear down of my 1986 944, it is an automatic. It was leaking oil badly and consuming coolant. It is back together now, sealed with no leaks and looking overall much better as well. I have worked my way down to two remaining problems before I can have my 944 back on the road again.
1) There is what I believe a hyd. lifter that is not functioning properly, making a sort of popping noise while running. 2) I believe it is the flex disc mounted directly behind the engine which is causing a very loud noise and some physical vibration to the car while it is running. So I guess what I was looking for here is just some more information as to what steps I should take to first diagnose and secondly repair these problems. I have noticed that as the RPM's increase, the alleged flex disc noise lessens or quits all together. I don't know how much more rough the lifter problem, if it is a lifter problem, is making the engine run, but is it possible when this is resolved the flex disc noise will cease or is that something that will need to be dealt with? What exactly is happenening to create the noise coming from the bell houising? Is there concerns I should have of the results of prolonged engine running or high revolutions with these problems. Are either of these problems common 944 occurances? ![]() I have so far done no more then drive it about the driveway a little to test other things. I know I have not given a whole lot of information and would be glad to obtain and give any other information that could aid any of you in understanding what is happening. Any and all advice is appreciated and I would like to thank those of you reading and who will reply in advance. Thanks. ~~ Steve |
