In the Fires of Hell.....
|
A-Hole PHX Drivers
I was heading out to an appointment late Friday morning, and just about to turn onto the highway entrance near my home, and some a-hole behind me in a recent F-150 decides to go before the light changes:
![]() ![]() I proceed to start getting out of my car, and that's when they decide to take off. So I get a hit and run moron who basically totals my car and gets away with it - ARGH! Par for the course for Phoenix, in my experience...

Didn't even see him leave, very tricky.
How did you repair that hit, Sox? A friend has a rear clip that I can get from him, so stay tuned (although it will be a while...).

It went to a dealership on the insurance's tab.
Mostly good, but they over sprayed in the hatch and the wiring and the options sticker was covered. They left the clips holding the side marker light off, wrong value of bulbs..... small stuff. Good luck. Sox

that is very expensive to fix properly because it's spot-welded. to do a proper job you need to drill out each factory spot-weld to remove the panel, and then re-spot weld at the factory welding points which means a lot of manual labor hours.
around 15 years ago i think the total bill was around $11k for a repair that would pass factory inspection. insurance will try to total the car so be prepared to provide documents to prove the true market value if you want it repaired correctly.

Peter, that's what I am expecting to hear from them. I actually haven't even called them about this yet, as I expect that will be the answer (total it).
Stay tuned...

If you buy it back, I have a decent passenger tail light you can have for the price of shipping.

Maddog is on a AR plan as in always resuscitate as opposed to the DNR (do not resuscitate)

if you want to avoid a salvage title it might be worth it for you to hire an independent appraiser to document and prove the actual value of the car. that's what i had to do. i now have an "agreed value" insurance so i can always fix the car up to $50k.

Never will go for the same price as a clean title. Also mars the pedigree of the car.

sox, for me it was more for a sense of pride and wanting to get the car repaired to factory specs. you can't tell my car was rear ended even if you strip the paint and inspect the welds.
but maintaining the resale value is usually a more popular reason to not get it salvaged.

i guess i should expand on the reason to repair vs. salvage. if insurance totals the car they might pay you, say, $5000 and then you could potentially buy the car back at a discount. a proper repair would cost upwards of $12,000 so unless you plan to pay out of pocket there's no way you could get the car properly repaired.
if you want the car properly repaired, you need to avoid insurance totaling the car. it stands to reason that every car with a salvaged title was never properly repaired, which is why the resale value is greatly depreciated.
