New 951! How did I do? and some questions!

Sorry, I posted this in the n.a. forum...so it posted in both places..didn't realize there was a Turbo forum... New 951! How did I do? and some questions! Ok...after selling my SC I went through withdrawals and had to have another P car in the garage! I wanted to buy something a bit less expensive (intial purchase) than another 911. I had always loved the look of the 951! And have driven a few in my day. So I finally took the plunge! The car I purchased has 65,000 original miles, and had a long list of work done at 64,800 or so. Including belt tensioning, brake pads, new water pump and starter, and all fluids. However, the car was only driven less than 200 miles in four years! Although the PO did at least monthly start and drive the car a short distance to keep everything moving. I drove the car home about 300 miles last weekend. Fast and smooth, shifts like a dream (new clutch at 45,000). Besides a deep cleaning here is what I have planned, asap. - Oil and Filter change - Brake Fluid change - Coolant flush - New Spark Plugs - New Tires and plan to have the belt rechecked at 66,000 or so. That was really it. It seems to run great, and transmission fluid says every 60,000 miles so I was gonna leave that be. Anything else I am missing or should check? I have attached a pic! Oh and lastly, I have yet to Jack this car up, is it pretty intuitave on where to place the jack stand up front? I keep reading the Frame Rails? Don't want to bend the frame! Thanks!!

I would find out when the timing & balance belts were changed. I would also change the transmission fluid. My 2 cents worth.... Oh here are the lift points. Sox

well the 944 forum isn't just a NA forum... it's a catchall forum for all 924/944/968 cars. This forum is just better for really in-depth technical questions about 951s. Congrats again on the purchase. It's nice to see the recent trend of 911 and 914 guys accepting the 944.

I think you got taken on that beater, let me take it off your hands before it blows up. If you are unhappy with the way it shifts, try some Redline MT90. Nice car, BTW. Lou

Yes, probably the same car..it was in the wayy northern burbs. The car is like a time capsule, but it really sat for awhile. Needed a little bit of work but is really cool. Once I have had a chance to really drive the car I will post my thoughts on the 951 vs the 911sc.

if the car had the belt tensioned at 64,800 miles and that was 4 years ago I would have the belt changed. The timing belt seems to "wear" from both mileage and time.

Your 951 looks just like mine, nice. Don't feel bad about selling your SC. I sold my 69 911 3.0 rs clone too. The only thing I miss about it is the flat six sound and the coolness factor. Once you realize how gd fast the 951's are, and only with minor mods (ecu chip, and a lindsey boost enhancer) you won't look back. The car already has better brakes , suspension, gearbox, and overall performance. I am on my 2nd 951 since I sold my 911. My first one was wrecked by a friend of mine after he learned about boost in the apex of a corner. Best part about owning a 951 is being able to "reel in" just about anything on the highway in a car that cost about as much as new Kia Rio. !!!!!

Sonny, As a former 911 owner. How do you rate the quality of the 951? (I know the the 911 was a 69!). But do you find yourself having to repair-fix items all the time? I am cool with maintenance costs however my 911 never gave me much in the way of trouble! I can say this off the bat tho..it shifts 1000 times nicer than the 901/915 gearbox..and yes the power is intoxicating-the boost is just addicting...I have only driven the car briefly so far as it has been getting fixed up...new belts, front engine reseal and and all new fluids. New tires tomorrow and she is all set for the summer!

| 951's
I've never had any issues with either of my 951 's. I did buy low mileage clean cars from PCA guys like you did. I think they are built very well with a solid chassis / drive-line. The cars are so reasonably priced that used parts for them are also low price. Lets face it , even if you blew the engine apart you could find another one on this site or elsewhere for 3K. Take that 3K and try to overhaul a 911 engine. You'll be able to buy some gaskets, head studs, and a little machine work on the valve seats !! LOL. A friend of mine just went through his 911SC engine only to get it up and running again after fixing a few broken head studs. Doing all the work himself he still spent close to 5K. I drove it recently, sounded great like all the 911's do but I felt like I was being pushed by a giant marshmallow compared to a 951. Want a big smile on your face for as little as 200.00$ Buy a "max" dme chip and a boost enhancer from Lindsey Racing, install both in your car in about 2 hours and you'll be thinking holy crap is this car fast (you can trade in your stock dme chip for the Max chip)

Great to hear! The giant Marshmallow comment has me cracking up! I think my SC gave the feeling of speed, the sounds and visceral feeling driving that car. This summer will really be a true test. I have some serious road trips planned. I will see how long I can hold out keeping her stock-...but we will see! The only mod I had really planned was a cat bypass pipe. I hope never to find out the blown engine scenario, but it is nice to know it is a doable fix if a catastrophe does occur. Thanks for the info. After I put some miles on the car I will report an in-depth comparison of the two (SC vs 951).

| 951 vs 911
I forgot to mention that I did have my 911 and my first 951 at the same time. I would toggle back and forth driving the 951 one day the 911 the next. The 911 rs clone I had was no dog. Probably why it sold on this site in a day or 2 for 18K. It was light and super quick and set up for the track, 30mm torsion bars ,ect. It was fun to launch that car from light to light and through corners. BUT I was so surprised by the performance of the 951 I decided I could do without the 911 and free up some space in the driveway. My 951 is the same color as yours with black interior/sport seat option. Lindsey full 3'' exhaust , dual port waste gate, boost enhancer, autothority chips. I've been toying with installing a bigger turbo + MAF but not sure yet. That is me one one of the other post asking about turbo upgrades. I can almost light the rear tire on fire when the boost comes on in 2nd, I may have enough hp for now LOL My wife thinks we are all Porsche dorks ! LOL

Well you kind of have me intrigued on the boost enhancer, I have been doing some research. Don't you have to readjust your fuel mapping to compensate for the increased boost? Does that come with new a new chip? Do you think you are sacrificing reliability for power? I just wonder if you truly run the risk of blowing a head gasket or blowing the turbo? Maybe, I am too cautios..but this is kind of cool, none of these options even existed with my SC! How many HP do you think you are putting down, and what do you estimate your 0-60 and 1/4 mile times to be with you mods? Oh and yes, I get you on the dorks thing...I had my girlfriend sit in the 951 as the pumper (don't laugh) as I bled the brakes on Sunday. She thinks I am nuts...she kept saying "this is what you do for fun!!"

If you keep the "stock" setting on the LBE, you SHOULD be okay. The stock setting, however, does raise the boost from the CAR's stock setting, by about 3psi or so (it varies from car to car). If you are a little worried about the possibility of blowing a head gasket, you can back off the boost a little by loosening up the adjustment nut. You will be running closer to the car's stock boost setting, but the turbo will spool at lower RPM. A better route, IMHO, is to get a chip set and a 3.0 bar FPR and run slightly higher boost.

| being cautious
I did forget to mention after reading CJFusco's post. : rather than "guess" the whereabouts of where your boost level is after doing any mod, install a real boost gage and just monitor the actual boost at wide open throttle in 2nd, 3rd, or if you have the cubes 4th That being said, if you install a chip set or just a boost enhancer you can monitor and /or adjust your maximum boost levels. This will be another good job for your girl friend Tell her to watch the highest needle deflection on the boost gage and also for the highway patrol. ( I did replace my stock waste gate with the Lindsey dual port model so that I could do more mods to the engine later if I wanted to. The dual port waste gate requires the use of a manual boost controller which deletes the function of the KLR boost controller. No danger really as long as you know what level your max boost is at and that you are not running lean. I have set my max boost levels, including any spikes to never exceed 15 psi. More boost than that and you will need more gas going into the cylinders + possibly a performance head gasket.

I use a 45.00$ Autometer boost gauge and checked it against a calibrated pressure gauge a few times and it was always right on the money. Just "T" right into to sense line tube on the KLR in front of the passengers feet and you done in no time. Don't buy that goofy injector duty cycle/air-fuel ratio unit. It tells you just about nothing and has lots of blinking lights. Ask me how I know. Get a wide band with an O2 sensor | ||

thats a beautiful car! love the fuchs. my last porsche was also a 911 sc and it was fun, and had the looks, but my friend beat me in a 200hp maxima and i found myself at the porsche dealer again. 951's are quick to begin with and can be sped up noticibly without premature organ donation. i hope you enjoy it thats a nice car. welcome to the "water" side of porsche
