Unless a previous owner had to replace the tank and used one from an early car, you have a 21 gallon tank.

If you only can get 5 miles after the light comes on, something's wrong with your sending unit or guage. This is quite common and usually not too bad of a fix.

good to know! i never let it get low enough for the light to come on, so the most fuel i've pumped into it is 17 gallons.

ok that makes me feel better. now does the guage go down below the "R" on the fuel guage into the area that is glowing? or does it stop moving when it gets to the top of the glowing area.

I've been about 70 miles with the light on before runnig out. I would suggest stopping at about 60 miles. Walking to a gas station in the middle of winter is not fun.

Yea - IIRC there are two sizes of tanks. The larger ones are sought after by track guys.

The manual for my '86 lists a single tank size. 21 gallon. The early cars are 18 gallon. Two sizes, but no option. The larger tank was not factory-available on the early cars, and the smaller tank was not factory-available on the later cars.

In either case, the light is supposed to come on with 2 gallons remaining, which in my normal driving should be at least 50 miles.
