changing to the 180 mph cluster

If i change the 160 mph cluster in my 86 951 to a 180 mph from a 88 951 will it fit with no problems and give me a correct reading???

nynor 08-22-2007 03:40 PM

probably. the signal is read by the dme. i have an '86 DME in my '88 and it works fine.

adrian1 08-22-2007 11:15 PM

Hopefully it will work....

i remember reading a writeup on this somewhere on rennlist. i remember reading it won't work without some adjustment.

Don't know about compatibility, but the Speed sender goes directly to the gauge and not through the DME.

I run a 180 mph speedo on my 86'.........and it is accurate to 1 mph upto 120 mph. I did not test past that speed.

Plug and Play

GPS verified.

would it be just the wiring and the setup in the speedo that converts it to a speed reading. so there would be no adjustments at all. switching between a 180 to a 160 or vice versa. that is what i would be thinking. since there is nothing in between them. i would think the germans would have engineered somthing like that.

Yup, looks like I was wrong. I could have sworn that I read somewhere that the speed signal come from the DME. Probably did and the source was just as mistaken as myself.

Thanx I probably be switching mine out soon...
