![]() ![]() I just started to tear into the clutch job. Starter, waste gate, heat shields, and exhaust is all out. Heading back to the trans axle now. It appears to be straight forward but why do I need remove the crossover pipe? Clarks says to take it off with the intake bla bla. Does it have to come off even when I can see the bell housing bolts ?? |

I haven't gone through the Clark's Garage procedure, or done this yet on my car. However, there are two different procedures to use, one if you have the single-piece crossover pipe (More involved), and a simpler one if you have the two-piece.
One other thing to consider: I have heard that those upper bell housing bolts are very difficult to get to. You need some extensions and a universal joint. Removing the crossover may be required to get enough room to work effectively on them. Cheers, Keith

this might be an even stupider question... but can you not get the crossover pipe off without taking the intake manifold off on an 86?

heheh, i've currently been busy removing my motor so i haven't had much time to check in here as frequently.
i'm not 100% sure, but i think leaving the crossover in place might make it difficult to remove the bellhousing, and later to align the new clutch properly. you can remove the crossover without removing the intake manifold.

i've been thinking about this some more, and i'm wondering if maybe the wastegate is what actually needs to be removed for a clutch job, and to remove the wastegate you have to remove the crossover (or exhaust/muffler).
here's a photo of the motor removed with exhaust manifold and crossover in place; ![]() and a head-on view of the bellhousing that must be removed; ![]()

yeah, it does look like the wastegate could cause problems.

The crossover only has to come off if you have the early '86 version. The later versions had a shorter connection for the wastegate and a separate elbow pipe.
