Crossover pipe heat shield
Hi guys, the heat shield on my crossover pipe is loose, makes a nice rattling noise. Any suggestions? Just spot weld back to the pipe? Remove totally?

I pulled mine totally.
I still have an identified rattling that occurs at idle when I am at an intersection. It will not make the noise when parked in my garage or driveway.

i'd spot weld it back on. every little bit of heat retention helps to spool the turbo quicker.

I never thought of that, I just assumed the heat shield was there to protect the closeby parts (oil pan gasket, control arm rear bushing etc.)

![]() ![]() etc, etc. i think the heat shields on the actual exhaust manifold itself is to retain hot exhaust gasses for improved turbo performance. similar to why turbo race cars have heat-wrap and ceramic coating on their exhaust manifold, we get it free from the porsche factory engineers. ![]()

A hard fact of nature is that 1 BTU equals 778 ft-lbs. That is huge and that is why the heat losses must be kept to a minimum to generate the maximum amount of power in a turbocharger turbine.
Energy is contained in gas streams via its temperature, its pressure, and its velocity. The turbine in your turbocharger transforms the energy contained by temperature (thermal energy) to pressure and velocity to spin the turbine.
