951 Exhaust Blast from the Past

Just for fun...

This factory part failed on my modified 951 back in 1998 on the way to the Historics at Laguna Seca. Took a while to find the cause of the "low boost" symptom and stumped some of the best. This factory exhaust center section was dissected using a borrowed sawzall at Partsheaven. I took some pics last weekend as I was finally discarding the leftover pieces. Some time ago, my friend, the late Jim Pasha, took some pictures... they never made it into an article however.

What could have caused that to happen?

Who, exactly, is Magneto?

And what kind of dirty work is it, exactly, that he does?

Apparently not. I have heard of them, but never saw any of their movies. Their "original" gig was comic books, wasn't it?

Yes, comic books. Not that I have ever read any of them....

FWIW, Magneto can bend metal with his powers, hence the reference

I originally posted about this in 1998 on Porshefans or whatever we had at the time. Immediately fixed several cars that folks were having trouble diagnosing. When Pasha was over taking pictures for the two articles about engine building in Excellence, we took some pictures of these parts, but we never followed up to get a technical Q&A on this problem into the magazine.

This issue stumped many back then including Milledge. The fellow that pointed me in the right direction was a pro mechanic and ex pro racer (IMSA), and is still a friend. He had seen this in a customer car-- a silver rose turbo s... the one on the cover of the PCNA water cooled parts catalog from back in the day.

Blast from the past.

Ho my god. Are you serious? No XMEN for you? And Magneto's power was magnetism hence the name.

Oh wow!! Hey Mike! I remember when Mat figured that one out. We used to use that 944 TS for running parts around town. I think it made its way into an autocross one time, too. Anyway, it's great to see that pic as it brings back memories...

Yea, serious. I haven't read a comic book in many, many years. And I don't have any idea, whatsoever, how many "X" men there are, or what names they go by, other than the one mentioned here. But it does seem that magneto's ability to culminate enough of a magnetic field to make metal bend, is somewhat limited, because it will only work on ferrous metals. If there is an X man who has the ability to heat things up to extreme temperatures, then that's who's work would have been at hand here, if we are looking for someone to "blame".

On a more serious note, why is the pipe double-walled, anyways? It can't be to retain heat energy, because it is AFTER the turbocharger. And it can't be to maintain longevity, because it is stainless, and won't rot through, anyways. Does anyone know, or think they know? Or guesses, maybe?

It feels funny answering my own post, but after thinking about it for a day (not continuously), I came up with an educated guess.

My guess is that it IS to retain heat, but not for the reason of retaing energy. Must be to block heat from escaping for reasons of being able to place the pipe closer to the firewall, body, and other parts of the car without cooking them, right? The reason I suspect this is that we all know how tightly things are packed under the hood of these cars.
