Turbo S Koni shock replacement

Just picked up an 88 Turbo S, one of the Silver Rose cars. This is my second 88 Turbo S, silver rose. We won't talk about the first one . Anyways, the car only has 39k miles on it but one of the rear shocks may need to be replaced. I have been searching for what the proper Koni adj. shock replacement part number is and a retailer that sells them. Pelican lists some, but unsure if it is the correct part number for a Turbo S. Thanks for the help!

PET lists the M030 rear shock as PN 951.333.032.04. $313 each new from Pelican.

You can just send your old ones back to Koni and they will rebuild them, if you don't mind waiting. Figure $100 per shock.

I have Koni sports on my '87 951 and am running 18" Turbo twists. I can say that with this configuration, you can tell whether or not the quarter you just ran over was heads up or tails up!

Is the M30 set-up any more compliant?

M030 is stiffer. You can tell what year that quarter is when you run over it

Will they do fronts for same price?

More like $200 per strut, based on when I did mine in 2008. I think it was $150 for the rebuild, but count on another $50 in internal parts.

The crappy thing is that you only get a 90 day warranty with the rebuild, vs. buying brand new retail Koni's you get a lifetime warranty.

The only real advantage on struts is that if you rebuild them you can convert them over to "Double-adjustables" (Compression and rebound) for something like $700 per strut. Once you do the "hacksaw rebuild", that option is gone.

No lifetime on OEM koni's, I presume. That would have been nice. DA's would also be nice, but for 1400/pr, it's out of the question. I am curious about the "hacksaw" method though. Is it simply a matter of cutting them apart, at the right spot (I would be using a reciprocating saw), replacing the internal parts with the parts in the $50 (each) kit, and then welding them back together?

If that ticket will fly, where can I find the kits?

Thanks for providing the link, but as usual for me, it brings up more questions than answers.

First off, mine are already yellow, so a "conversion" is not what I need. I believe that all I need is the "8641-1414 Sport inserts".

I haven't actually looked closely at my struts, but if I recall correctly, struts have a washer-like threaded ring at the top that is screwed out using a spanner wrench, or something. Then all one needs to do is slide out the old insert, and replace it with the new one. After the top "plug" is screwed back in and tightened, and the springs are put back on, the strut should be good-to-go, right? This way, they could be done without removing them from the car, thereby preserving the alignment. Or is there some aspect that I'm failing to grasp here?

Oops, I think I just realized what I was failing to grasp. Man, do I feel like an idiot. It must be the INSERTS that we are talking about rebuilding here - not the struts themselves. So it's those damn inserts that cost 400 apiece new, and 200 to rebuild, correct? I wonder how much those "8641-1414 Sport inserts" cost from the place in the link? And do they sell the $50 internal parts kits for them , if I opt to go the cut-apart-and-reweld route.

Ok I just read some more of that link and I see that they are talking about "sealed" struts. I should have seen that the first time - my bad. So the strut itself needs to be cut, along with a bolt hole drilled up though the bottom, in order to install the new cartridge. That shouldn't be too bad. What is the cheapest price that those cartridges can be had for?

Paragon sells them for around $200 each... Search on 1414 and you will find them.

That's a bit pricey. I have found them for $150. But seeing as though I don't notice that there is anything wrong with my stock ones (other than mileage), I don't even want to pay that much. But you know what? I have just come to realize that I don't need adjustable ones. Since I would have the stiffness set to max anyways, it would suffice for me to use [less expensive, obviously] non-adjustable inserts. I just need to come up with the koni part# for the non-adjustable cartridge that is the equivalent of the 1414 set to max damping. Does anyone know what that part# might be?

All konis are adjustable. At least on the rebound.

I'm curious though. If your inserts are yellow right now, then they are already sports. The standard konis are red and the sports are yellow.

And one thing to remember if you are gonna run them at full stiff: make sure to turn them as far as they go, and then back off toward soft by about 1/4 turn. When adjusted FULLY to the end of the range, the valving is essentially closed and won't work properly.

Also, full stiff on konis is REALLY stiff. Are you sure that your spring rates warrant that level of dampening?
I just have some experience with them in my urq. In my SC I have bilsteins.

Michael
