Reference sensor bracket

Does anyone out there have a good close up picture of the block where the ref/spd sensor bracket mounts? I need to see if the tension sleeve fits flush with the block. I can't get the sensor mount off, because it is hanging up on the tension sleeve (lower bolt hole insert)

You cannot get that mount out without either removing that centering collar by pushing it out towards the rear of the car (Difficult to do, not sure if it's even possible), or by loosening up the bell housing.

This is one of the reasons that I notched out my bell housing a bit deeper, to be able to get that mount out if needed.

What I would suggest, if you can, is to try to get a flat blade screwdriver between the engine block and the centering collar and see if you can drive it back farther onto the bracket.

When I had to install mine for the first time, I had already bolted up the bell housing and ran into the reverse of your issue. I pushed the collar back so it was flush with the front of the bracket hole, put the bracket in place, then used pliers or the like to slide the collar forward and into the engine block.

Good luck,

Keith

That's what I was afraid of, it looks like the sleeve around the reference sensor is what prevents the mount from coming out.

That is the problem with the later cars that use the smaller starter. TechnoDuck had mentioned that after he broke his bracket while doing his modifications, he replaced the sleeved bracket with an early one (No sleeve).

When he tried to start the car, it would not run. He eventually figured out that the small starter was producing excessive EMI, which messed up the injector signaling. He replaced the bracket with one with a sleeve, and everything worked again.

At least you are not alone....

i cut a notch out on my bell housing to make it possible to remove the bell housing with the sensors in place;

You haven't had a problem with EMI? Read the post up two from this (kdjones2000).

That bracket has the sleeve on it. What Peter is showing is how to notch out the bell housing so that you can get the sensors and bracket out without having to loosen up/remove the bell housing.

Of course you need to remove the bell housing once in order to notch it :(

Good luck, Keith

Duh, stupid me....I miss read his post. Thanks for the clearification kd. Bellhousing is off, so I will notch it while it's on my bench. And do the clutch etc while I'm here. Thank God for wholesale parts and an extremely reliable clutch disk rebuilder.

Here's an easy and inexpensive WYAIT thing to do to stiffen up that transmission mount:
