Question Turbo Water Pump Questions!

Some basic information needed about the pump, to ensure it is functioning correctly. So, the stock turbo water pump runs for 30 seconds after shutdown.

While the car is running, at what temperature does it turn on at? If there is no longer a temp sensor hooked up, does it default to always running when the car is on, or does it stay off?

Can water get by the pump if it is not running?

That is all, thanks!

Chally72,

According to the Clark's Garage writeup, the turbo electric water-pump only runs when the car is shutoff. It will run for at least 25 to 30 seconds every time the car is turned off. It will run longer if the water temp in the turbo coolant line is above 115C (as sensed by the temperature sensor).

When the car is running, the coolant is supplied to the turbo by the mechanical water-pump and is regulated by a separate (smaller) thermostat just for the turbo coolant circuit. This thermostat is an 82C thermostat. When the car is running, coolant is pulled through the non-running turbo electric water-pump.

I am not sure how the turbo electric water-pump behaves if the temp sensor is not present. I would guess when the car was shut off, it would either run for 25 to 30 seconds only or run all of the time.

Right now, I have no temp sensor in-line. My pump runs for the 30 seconds after shutdown. I don't have the Y-splitter water hard line to the passenger side of the turbo, so there is no bypass to the reservoir. I was concerned that this bypass was to keep the water in the turbo there until it got up to temp, at which point the pump would turn on and the water would flow mainly through the turbo instead of the bypass.

From the info you provided, I can rest easy that all my setup is doing is cooling the turbo more than it should normally be when the car is running. The only thing I have to be careful of is to make sure to cool the car down a bit after a hard run before shutting it off, to ensure the 30 second runtime is enough.

Thank you!

No, scratch that, because the turbo pump doesn't pull water toward the reservoir, it pushes it towards the water pump. So unless the water can flow through the mechanical pump, all I am doing is backing up all this hot water through the tube and turbo. Doh.

It CAN flow through the mechanical pump.
