Handbrake turns
has anyone tried them on their cars? i want to learn it but i don't know where to start. .and it's tricky since our handbrake is on the left.
if someone can post a video of this maneuver with a 944/951 it would be appreciated. |

Didn't NJ just have a bunch of snow? Head out to a slick parking lot.. get up a little speed, turn steering wheel and pull up handbrake. Keep button pressed in so you can put the handle back down when you are done... Practice Lefts and Rights! Have fun

You have a 944 Turbo... You don't need the handbrake, just hit boost hard in 2nd during a tight corner and it'll do the same thing.
![]() More seriously, go ahead and give it a try in empty parking lots and all that, but bear in mind that it's really only useful for stunt driving; it won't get you around a track faster.

No idea if this is true at all, but I read somewhere along the line that by locking up the back wheels like that on our cars (since it has the rear transaxle) it could also lock up something or another in the motor and snap the timing belt (obviously leading to many other problems....) Hopefully someone else knows what I'm talking about or has heard of this so I dont sound like I'm crazy

Coming up on your left...

I don't think locking up the back wheels on our cars would cause the timing belt to snap. If that were the case, any time we hit the regular brakes the same thing would happen, as the regular brakes lock up the same wheels as the handbrake.
But yes, it's kind of pointless to do it anyways, since our cars have enough power to "drift" without using the parking brake. And our cars aren't that good at rallying

i just said that for reference.
i know not to rally on our 20+yr old cars. it's always good to learn something new and have up the sleeve. .. Last edited by shavinseconds; 01-04-2011 at 08:02 AM.. |
