Well...HG and other problems
So, I took the car out of storage to have my boost problems addressed, and it was mostly a bunch of vacuum leaks. The shop also fixed some oil and coolant leaks. I also had them do a block test to see how my head gasket was, since I've been using some coolant. Of course, the head gasket is bad. I have no reason to not trust the shop; he's a fellow PCA member with a bunch of 944's himself.
So, I'm going to bite the bullet and fix all this stuff. He said I should also do the timing belt and water pump since he's halfway in there, and it was due sometime around now or next year anyways. Since I work in the parts business, he said I can get my own parts if I want to, which helps. So I need to know any and all parts that I would need for a head gasket replacement. I have some questions as well: The reinz HG set that's wide fire-is that worthwhile or necessary, or should I just get the regular one? The set includes a bunch of other gaskets, which I imagine I'll need. Or can I skip those? I don't want to be cheap but I'm looking to be wasteful, either. Zims sells a timing belt kit and their water pump is a very reasonable price, as well. I am probably going that route, since this is costing me a buttload of money as is. Is that the complete kit for the timing belt job? He has all the tools so that's not the worry. The worry is the price of the operation, which is enough for a decent used car ![]() Thanks for the help. Not a good year so far and I've only driven it about 200 miles. I hope this is it.

Lindsey Racing has a Head Gasket Kit. I believe Pelican and Rennbay both have kits for a water pump / timing and balance belts. The big question is rebuilt water pump or new. Will you be doing the rollers and front end seals?
I am in the process of taking care of a lot of neglected maintenance. I ordered the following for my Water Pump job. Timing Belt and Roller Kit (can get Kevlar or regular Gates) Rebuilt Water Pump (Includes thermostats and gaskets) Front Engine Seal Kit (w/sleeves, oil pump gear, cam bolt, etc... everything needed for the front not just the seals) I don't know what the LR Kit for the Head Gasket includes, but I found this list of parts needed for the Head Gasket job. 1986 Porsche 951 Head Gasket Procedure Radiator Drain Plug: 944 106 353 01 Seal for Radiator Drain Plug: 944 106 354 00 Seal for Oil Drain Plug: 900 123 049 30 Dipstick tube O-ring: 900 174 044 40 Head Gasket Set Head gasket: Use Widefire Gasket Intake Gaskets (4): 944 110 163 05 Exhaust rings (2): 944 111 205 04 Exhaust Gaskets (4): 944 111 196 01 Coolant Neck Gaskets (3): 944 104 311 06 951 104 311 03 928 106 197 04 Cam Tower Gasket: 928 105 199 12 Header to Crossover bolts/nuts (6): Washers: 999 025 078 02 Bolts: 900 074 283 02 Locking Nuts: 999 084 052 02 After looking at the shop hour estimates for my water pump, power steering rack and power steering pump project, I am getting ready to tackle them myself. I don't think I even made 200 miles last year so I am a bit more stingy. Good luck! |

I think you only need the wide fire HG if you have an O ringed head? Otherwise stock HG is fine.

PS if your gonna start comparing the price of keeping one of these cars on the road with the prices of normal cars, your gonna be in a world of hurt!
You gotta keep them because you luv'em! ![]() |

Well, it's in the shop now getting all this done. I just had to cash in some savings for a vacation and whatnot and get it done. He doesn't have the head apart yet but I'm hoping that's all for now. I don't think I was driving around on a blown HG for very long at all-maybe a day or so. There is no coolant in my oil or vice-versa.
The shop normally doesn't allow people to bring their own parts, but "since I'm in the business," he told me it was okay. I got the timing belt kit made by Contitech, a Zims water pump, and the normal reinz HG set. What made it complicated is that I have an 86 model year with an 88 Turbo S engine in it. I know these cars are expensive to own, but damn I was just not expecting a repair bill that high. I had it pegged at like a quarter of the estimate. I'll feel better once I have her back, especially seeing how nice it was today, how nice it's going to be tomorrow, and the days off that I have soon.

Haha I'm no rookie to these cars. It'll be five years of ownership in October. I'm used to the "issues," but I'll never get used to stickershock.
I love this car, and will be happier when I get her back in A+ condition. Next project: fix the door handle, and refurbish the wheels. Thankfully, those are both cheap things to fix ![]()
